About National Institute of Design - NID Ahmedabad

National Institute of Design or NID is one of the well known Design Institutes in India. NID is a Society registered under the Societies Registration Act,1860 (21 of 1860) and also registered under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1960 (29 of 1960) and established in 1961 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Industry (now known as the Ministry of Commerce & Industry). NID is a grant-in-aid autonomous institution under the aegis of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. NID has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology,Government of India. NID is recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation. The Institute offers various Graduate and Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in Design.

Facilities

KMC - Knowledge Management Centre is a new age format of an integrated approach to managing library, research centre, digital services in a seamlessly integrated manner envisaging a central role in the educational activities at NID. KMC uses Intranet & Internet facilities towards knowledge sharing among students, faculty and outside world. The Centre focuses on collection of books, audiovisual materials on design and its related fields.

Services:

  • KMC has a collection has approximately 33,035 books. The periodical section has nearly 150 current journals with 5,000 back volumes mostly on design-related subjects.
  • The document collection contains nearly 1053 student Diploma Projects, 409 Craft documentation's and more than 810 project reports which NID had undertaken during the past 4 decades, which are unique with innovative themes and research oriented studies.
  • It has a unique collection of audiovisual materials, which includes films, audio cassettes, audio LP's, audio tapes, audio CD, CD ROM databases, digital audio tapes etc.
  • The Centre harbours a rare collection of about 678 design classics from the Museum of Modern Art, New York which consists the works of eminent designers such as Charles Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Alto, and several other great designers of the 20th century.

IT Centre - The centre initiated an online education programme in the field of design education such as Macmillan-NID “Good Design”. Other IT integrated facilities like New Media Lab, Film & Video Lab, Textile CAD Lab, K-Portal have also been introduced.

DVC - Design Vision Centre is a cutting edge design support facility for education, research and consultancy services with three hi-tech laboratories.

Laboratories:

  • HPV - High Performance Visualisation Laboratory provides Virtual Prototyping facility.
  • RPD - Rapid Product Development Laboratory 3D facility.
  • MTM - Mind to Market Laboratory provides FreeForm Concept System software and the PHANTOM Omni-interface hardware device for creating virtual objects.

ICIC - International Centre for Indian Crafts has been established to understand the needs, strengths and weaknesses of a particular crafts sector and apply NID's interdisciplinary design expertise and knowledge base for capacity building and skill up gradation of artisans with a Global - Local approach.

Studios
- A well-established studio practice ensures effective and diverse visualisation skills and ingrained sense of quality.

Various Studios are as follows:

  1. Wood Studio - This spacious studio has all facilities and equipment for working in wood.
  2. Metal and Plastic Studio - Metal objects, including some types of furniture and prototypes of industrial products or household articles of every description are made here.
  3. Student's Model Making Studio - All design students are required to learn the use of simple hand tools and basic materials such as wood, metal and plastics. The studio is equipped with all the requisite hand tools necessary to create models.
  4. Paint Shop - The fully equipped paint shop provides spray-painting facilities, to provide the finishing for models.
  5. Ceramic Studio - Ceramic Studio is equipped with the requisite machinery used for batch production, as well as ceramic kilns where the design prototypes can be fired at different temperatures. The studio is also equipped with a ceramic lab, where students learn to prepare different ceramic bodies and glazes.
  6. Photography - Photography facilities range from large format monorail cameras to digital cameras.
  7. Video Studio - It is equipped with production and post-production facilities, including non-linear editing. Trained staff of technicians and editors assist students in the film making process.
  8. Animation Studios - The facilities of these studios cover both, conventional and computer animation. NID is one of the very few to have the capability to produce 16mm animation films in-house, due to the Oxberry camera. The Quick Action Recorder (QAR) permits students to make line tests of their animation.
  9. Printing Studio - It has the facilities necessary for offset printing. Most of NID's publications are printed here, besides other professional assignments. In addition, this studio is also capable of silkscreen printing, especially for exhibitions and other graphic purposes.
  10. Textile Studio - It provides the opportunity to experiment and to develop prototypes / samples.
  11. Weaving Studio - It is equipped with production looms, including jacquard looms for developing a range of weave structures.
  12. Dyeing Studio - This studio has the necessary facilities for dyeing samples by both, chemical and natural dyeing process.
  13. Apparel Studio - The facilities in this studio cater to the draping and tailoring needs of Apparel students. It also has facilities for development of accessories.
  14. Leather Studio - This studio allows students to explore leather, and is equipped with leather stitching machines, skiving and splitting machines which assist students in utilising leather as a material for accessory design or furniture design.

Exchange Program - NID has signed MoUs with leading universities/institutions overseas to strengthen collaborative relationship with educational institutions of international repute and to pave the way for exchange of faculty members, exchange of students, joint research activities, participation in seminars and academic meetings etc. while placing Indian Design in a global context.

IPR Cell - Intellectual Property Rights Cell is involved in facilitating and guiding students and others in the various aspects and issues in the field of IPR.
    
NDBI  - National Design Business Incubator is an initiative of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad set up with the support of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. NDBI is incorporated as a non profitable Section 25 Company under company act of India. NID is internationally recognized as one of the foremost multidisciplinary institutions in the field of design education, research, training and service.

Overseas Candidates - 10% seats in Post-Graduate Diploma Programme are reserved for foreign countries/ SAARC region/ NRI candidates on supernumerary basis. Overseas candidates applying for admission into Graduate Diploma Programme in Design can send in their application to the Institute during November. Such students may attend admission test at one of the test centres and if short-listed can attend the interview at Ahmedabad. They should fill in the prescribed application form and send the same with their portfolio to Registrar (Academics), NID on or before November.

Outreach Programmes - The Institute conducts workshop and training programmes tailored to the specific needs of particular groups and aimed at assisting them to put design awareness in schools, at primary and secondary levels.

IP and P - Industry Programmes and Projects conducts Short-term training programmes,workshops, seminars and design-clinics for product development are conducted by NID both in the campus and off-campus.

Placement Cell - The Cell invites industry for Pre Placement Talks. Professional experience prior to graduation such industrial training, classroom projects and diploma project also falls under the purview of the Placement Cell. Classroom projects seek to expose students to a wide variety of real life situations, and to test their skills on problem solving. Training with industry is for a period of 4 to 8 weeks where students work on ongoing problems under the supervision of a client. The final diploma project is of six-month duration and is a full-scale demonstration of independent client service. The Placement cell maintains contact with industry and brings to the notice of students industrial training, classroom project and diploma project opportunity.
