Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology started functioning from 21st July 1952 with three faculties- Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The Foundation tablet for the main building of the college was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India on 19th February 1953. Dr. R.M. Alagappa Chettiar who was a man of rare wisdom and forethought, founded Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust with the sole aim of developing the backward area of Karaikudi into a centre for higher education and provided necessary funds for the establishment of educational institutions. On the occasion of laying of the foundation stone of the Central Electro Chemical Research Institute by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 25th July 1948, Dr. Alagappa Chettiar in his welcome address said that it was his dream to start an Engineering College immediately. But before Dr. Alagappa Chettiar could actually see his dream materialising into reality, he passed away. In 1966, the Institution was handed over to the Government of Tamil Nadu. In 1969, a new faculty Electronics and Communication Engineering was started. Further part-time courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronics Engineering were introduced in 1971. M.E in Microwave and Optical Engineering and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) were started in 1983 and 1988 respectively. Since 2001, B.E in Computer Science and Engineering is also offered. M.E Optical Communication, M.E Computer Aided Design, M.E Manufacturing Engineering, M.E Environmental Engineering, M.E Power Electronics and Drive are offered from 2002-03 along with part-time B.E course in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Anna University, Tiruchirappalli has granted autonomous status to the college from the academic year 2009-10. The College is affiliated to Anna University, Tiruchirappalli from 2007-08.

Transportation - Several bus services and train services are available for visiting Karaikudi from outstations. Visitors can use several town buses or auto to reach the College within Karaikudi. One does not need to remember the Bus Numbers exactly. One can just ask the conductor for a ticket to Engineering College. Town buses are available from Karaikudi New Bus Stand frequently. One can get buses from Old Bus Stand too. One can reach the College from Karaikudi Railway Station too.

Hostels - Separate Hostel facilities are available for girls and boys. These include Hostel for First Year Students, Hostel for Second Year Students, Hostel for Third Year Students, Hostel for Final Year Students and Hostel for PG Girls. Monthly Mess is calculated for a period starting from 21st of every month to 20th of next month. Approximate Mess Bill comes around to Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1200 per month. Non Vegetarians will be served at extra cost once in a week. Mess Bill is to be paid only through ICICI bank on or before 20th of every month.
Library - The College Library has a collection of 42000 books, 14000 in SC/ST Book Bank, 1344 books in TEQIP and 741 in General Book Bank. About 100 journals and magazines are available regularly. Computerised Library Service has been introduced from the academic year 2008-2009. OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) has been made available for staff and students. The Library databases are made available to all the Departments. Students and staff can search for any book by title, by author, by publisher and so on using OPAC through http:\\192.168.18.2\opac\index.asp. They can also verify their account through OPAC. Students can use their roll number as user ID and password. 852 CDs are made available in the digital library for students and staff reference. Library is connected with campus wide networking program.

Associations - Each discipline of Engineering has its association which organizes seminars and symposia on technical topics. Papers are presented at the meeting by students, staff and experts in the respective field.
Various Associations:
1. Students Association - The Students Association is a general association to promote cultural activities of students. The associations affiliated to the Students Association are Tamil Mandram, Fine Arts Association, Photographic Society and Consumer Awareness Club.
2. NSS - National Service Scheme provide service to community while studying in an Educational Institution. It seeks to arouse the social conscience of students and provide them opportunity to work with people around the educational campus creatively, constructively and to apply to the education they received to concrete social gains. It also underlines that the welfare of the individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole. Three NSS units function in the college, with a total strength of 150 students.
3. NCC - National Cadet Corps is the Indian Military Cadet Corps to students on voluntary basis. It is an organization that recruits cadets and gives them basic military training in small arms and parades. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military service once they complete their course.
4. Leo Club - The Leo Club of Karaikudi cosmos ACCET chapter is sponsored by Lions Club of Karaikudi cosmos. The Club belongs to Lions Club International district 324-b3. The three goals of the Club are Leadership, Experience and Opportunity (LEO). LEO service develops qualities such as personal generosity, responsibility and dedication to one's community.
5. Tech-Lit - Tech-lit is an association with the objective of providing a common platform for development of personality traits such as communication skills, self confidence, public speaking, inter personal relationships. The organizing committee consists of elected students and staff in charge. The activities of the association are conducted in the college campus, off the college hours every week. Interested students from second and third year can become members. This association initiated by students with first thirty members in the beginning and has grown to the size of two hundred members now.
6. Rotaract Club - Rotaract stands for Rotary in Action. It is a professional services leadership and community service organization for youngsters. The objective is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the needs of their communities and to promote better relations between all people worldwide. The activities of the association include leading awareness campaigns and organizing them. Interested students from second and third year of all branches can become members.
7. Sangamam - In order to develop the creative skills of students, Sangamam has been organised in the College. It publishes Quarterly Magazines bearing the creations of students like stories, articles and poetry in both Tamil and English. Students and staff under the guidance of the Principal work for Sangamam.
8. ISTE - Indian Society of Technical Education is a national, professional, non-profit making Society registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. ISTE student's chapter TN156 is lead by Dr. L. Ganesan and its strength is 937. The major objective is to assist and contribute to the production and development of quality professional engineers and technicians needed by the industries and other organizations.
9. SAE - Society of Automotive Engineers students chapter ACCET is sponsored by SAE International Society. It started functioning in 2008. Activities include aeromodeling, quiz, Pro-E modelling and paper presentation. Members are sent to companies for technical training. SAE is open to students of Mechanical Engineering.
NRSC Building - The Non Resident Students Centre Building was declared open on the 27th March 1981 for the benefit of day scholars. It houses a couple of spacious dining halls with furniture. A room for the students association and a few guest rooms are also available in the NRSC Building.
Sports and Games - The College offers facilities for Outdoor and Indoor Games such as Cricket, Hockey, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Tennis and Table Tennis and Chess. There is a 400 m track for Athletics and the necessary equipment for Jumps, Throws, Power Lifting and Body Building. The membership of the Tennis Club is open to staff and students of the college. An Indoor Stadium and Gymnasium are also available.
Student's Cooperative Store - Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology and Alagappa Polytechnic Students Co-operative Society Limited was registered on 19.1.1956. Every student on admission to the college automatically becomes the member of Cooperative store. The Store primarily caters to the requirements of the students.
Medical Facilities - A Dispensary is functioning in the Hostel Campus with an attached in-patient ward to accommodate students and staff in case of illness. The unit is under the charge of a part-time medical officer assisted by a pharmacist. The Dispensary functions during forenoon session on all weekdays except Sunday.
Auditorium - The College Auditorium (Dewan Bahadur Murugappa Hall) is the College Auditorium seating a capacity of 600. It also has a spacious stage for conducting cultural programmes and entertainment.
Post Office - Alagappa Engineering College Post Office is located in the College campus.
Bank - One can avail SBI ATM facility in CECRI shopping complex near the campus. Indian Bank along with ATM facility is also situated near the College campus. ICICI Bank along with ATM facility is also reachable in a few metres on College Road.
Placement - The Department of Placement and Training of the College functions with a Placement Officer. It maintains information regarding Career Opportunities for fresh engineering graduates. It provides information to the out-going graduates as well as the unemployed old students of this college about the availability of suitable employment opportunities and helps them to communicate with prospective employers to seek employment. The Department arranges Campus Interviews and Employment Tests periodically with various organizations for the final year students to get employment immediately after graduation and to become familiar with employment interviews and tests which they may still have to face in future. Interviews are arranged for the pre-final year and final year students for software companies, core companies and multinational corporations. The Department also secures employment in Government Departments like Highways Department and Public Works Department.
