Established in rather unconventional times, the pioneering Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography (NIKC) lives and breathes dance. A platform of unparalleled stature and achievement, the Institute is dedicated to protect and nurture the legacy of Indian culture. Alongside setting new standards in dance education and the art of performance, Natya Institute seeks to inhabit the public domain through dance.

The history of Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography (NIKC) dates back to 1964 when Padma Vibhushan Smt Kamala Chattopadhyay established the institute under the aegis of Bharatiya Natya Sangh, the Indian Centre of International Theatres Institutions Trust, UNESCO. Formed with the intention of providing methodical training in the art of choreography, the Institute was led by an array of veteran artists and its format was designed by Guru Dr Maya Rao. In the year 1987, NIKC set foot in Bangalore with the assistance of the Government of Karnataka and at the special request of former Chief Minister, Shri Ramakrishna Hegde. Ever since, thousands of students have learned and adapted to a life of dance – a life of unmatched bliss.

Diploma in Choreography

Natya Institute of Kathak & Choreography proudly announces a unique 12-month choreography diploma designed for today’s dancer who seeks to balance a sound dance training with emerging trends in the global dance scenario.

12 Month Diploma

Natya is a symbiotic school of thought that fuses traditional dance disciplines and evolving choreographic trends as a medium for development through dance education, performance and interface.

Keeping this philosophy in mind, this specially designed course nurtures the creative abilities of dance students & provides the right atmosphere for them to make their mark as performers & choreographers of high calibre. The faculty at the NIKC is made up of eminent artists and experts from the field of dance, academia, media, music, theatre, design, management and therapy.

Subjects:

History & Art of Choreography, World History of Dance, Anthropology, Production design, Arts Appreciation, Dance aesthetics, Art history, Research & Documentation

Dance vocabularies- Kathak, Indian martial arts, folk/ ritualistic movement, mime and contemporary Indian dance
