The Department of Industries and commerce, Punjab announced the establishment of NIIFT in 1995 in order to realise the long pending need of the textile and garment industry particularly that of Punjab, for trained professionals.An MOU was signed with the National Institute Of Fashion Technology, New Delhi for steering and supporting in admission procedure, faculty recruitment and training as well as curriculum scheduling and upgrading. Mohali, equipped with the conspicuously fast developing and already established garment industry situated at Baddi, Lalru, Dera Bassi and in the vicinity of Chandigarh, became a preferred location for NIIFT to have its firm base and thus adding to the prestige and distinction of the famous city.

The Institute is striving to impart knowledge comparable with international standards provided by a very competent and learned faculty. Also the constant interaction with the garment industry instills in the students, the confidence in their own ability to keep up with the competitive industrial world.

The Institute functions under the guidance of the Governing Council consisting of nationally eminent celebrities, industrialists and senior government officials. The council is whole heartedly and deeply involved in the growth and development of the institute and its directions help in developing a value system so as to build an informal organisational culture to sustain a high level of education. NIIFT, in its contemporary essence, has emerged as a premier institute of North India possessing the ideology of commitment, creativity and professional integrity.

Facilities

Hostel - NIIFT provides excellent residential accommodation to outstation girl students of the institute at its own hostel, built and located in the immediate vicinity of the institute campus at Mohali. The hostel is well equipped with modern amenities and provides a mess service.

Library - The organization of the Library at NIIFT consists of books and other published resources of Indian and Foreign authors and publishers covering it's educational programmes and related subjects. It subscribes to leading Indian and International Textile, Fashion and apparel journals and fashion forecast services. It has large collection of slides & photographs.

Computer Centre - NIIFT possess a well structured Computer Centre having all the latest infrastructure. To keep pace with the latest developments in the field of design and planning, NIIFT has acquired the upgraded version (7.0) of CAD with state-of-the art hardware including Digitiser and Plotter from TUKA Tech Inc., USA..

Studios & Laboratories - The institute is equipped with workshops for Garment's construction, Draping, Pattern making, Fashion art and illustration, sketching and Apple Macintosh Computer Laboratory and a skilled work force to assist design and technology students in their learning. All these studios are equipped to handle professional work in addition to meeting training needs.

Resource Centre - The resource centre supports the teaching and research programmes of the Institute. The resource centre consists of Textiles, costumes, Samples and Swatches

Placement Service - A Placement Cell has been set up with the members drawn from the faculty and students for the purpose of facilitating campus placements. NIIFT is proud to of the fact that it has provided 100% placements to its students. Students have been placed in Leading and International Companies like RMX Joss, Vardhman Groups, Matrix Clothing etc.

Niift Bus Services - NIIFT also provides bus service to students, to and from the institute on nominal monthly charges.
