About National Institute of Technology - NIT Meghalaya

National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya (NIT-M) is a technical institute fully funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. NIT Meghalaya is one among the 30 NITs in India established as Institutions of National Importance. It was established by MHRD, GOI in 2010. The institute is on its way to establish its own campus on a plot of land of about 200 acres at Sohra. UG, PG and research programmes such as- B. Tech, M. Tech, Integrated M. Sc, Ph.D. etc. in wide range of disciplines will be offered. The Institute admitted its first batch of B. Tech. students in July, 2010 and the first two batches are carrying out their studies in the Mentor Institute, SVNIT Surat. The academic activities of the institute are supposed to be started in Shillong at the Bijni Complex of NEHU in the city from July, 2012. As of 2012, the Institute is offering B. Tech Program in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE).

NIT Meghalaya Location – As of 2012, NIT Meghalaya campus is functioning from Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah.  Its future campus is located at the geographical address - 25O 15’ 22” N, 91O 44’ 40” E in Sohra (Cherapunjee) in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. It is about 50 kms. from Shillong (nearly 2 hours drive).

Transportation – Reaching Shillong

• Air - Take a flight to Gopinath Bordoloi Airport, Guwahati, Assam. From there one can reach Shillong in four hours in a hired Taxi (Rs 2000/- per car, approx)/Shared Taxi (Rs 500/- per passenger, approx).
• Rail -The nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station. From the railway station, one can travel by bus or shared taxi (Rs. 150/- to Rs 300/- per passenger) to Shillong. It takes about 4 hours to reach Shillong.
• Commuting in the city - After reaching Shillong, one can hire taxi to NIT Meghalaya, Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah.
