Kerala Board of Public Examinations functions as "Department of General Education" of Government of Kerala Part of the State Department of Education and it holds the Authority to conduct two major secondary school examinations namely SSLC and HCLC . http://www.education.kerala.gov.in is the official website of the General Education Department of Government of Kerala. The department administers school education from pre-primary level to the secondary level and also teacher training. A total of 1,73,807 teachers working and 48,45,931 students studying from standard of I to X (as per 2004-05 stats) are under it.

  • HCLC  - Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination
Schools offer both English and Malayalam as language of instruction.

Board Divisions

For administrative convenience and improving the efficiently in school education, district offices are functioning in the 14 revenue districts of the state headed by Deputy Directors of Education. Each revenue district is divided into Educational Districts and further into Educational Sub-Districts.

  2. 161 Educational sub-districts in the State
Each District Educational Office is headed by District Educational Officer (DEO) and each Educational Sub-District Office is headed by Assistant Educational Officer (AEO). The DEO attends the administration of High Schools, Training Schools and other special types of schools in the Educational District. The AEO is primarily responsible for the administration of all primary schools within the Sub-District. Some of the regions under the Board Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram

Board Organisation

The Director of Public Instruction is the Head of the Department. The Director is also the Commissioner for Government Examinations in the state. He is assisted by Additional Directors, Joint Directors, Senior Administrative Officer, Senior Finance Officer, Law Officer, Deputy Secretary, Accounts Officers, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors and other staff in the headquarters. The Joint commissioner, the Secretary, The Assistant Secretary and other staff, located in the Pareekshabhaven, assist him in various Government Examinations conducted by the Department.

Fee Concession

1. SC/ST/OEC Kudumbies and Christian converts from SC/ST/OEC who are bonafide subjects of the Kerala State are eligible for full fee concession and stipend. They will have to produce at the time of admission a certificate of nativity and certificate of community, if community has not been specified in the SSLC.

2. Applicants belonging to the backward communities who are bonafide subjects of Kerala are eligible for full fee concession, provided the annual income of both their parents or guardian does not exceed RS 20,000.

Board's Achievements

Number of schools - In Kerala, there were 12,310 schools in 1999-2000 having 6726 lower primary (LP) schools, 2968 upper primary (UP) schools and 2580 high schools. Kerala schools posses better physical and basic facilities compared to those in other parts of India. 83% of schools are housed in proper buildings 84% of Government schools have drinking water facilities and 85% have urinals / latrine facilities.

Girl Education - Kerala has achieved near-equality in school enrolment with regard to gender. Girl students outnumber boys the high school stage. Girl students in schools constituted 49.1% of all students.

Primary Education - Primary Education consists of 2 levels, lower primary (Std I - IV) and Upper Primary (std V to VII). This comprises the biggest segment of the states education system. Almost every village has more than five primary schools. There are 6,726 lower primary and 2,968 upper primary schools. Of the primary schools 61.07% are private aided, 2.98% are private unaided and 35.95% are government schools.
