The Bihar School Examination Board, Patna had been established under the authority of Bihar School Examination Board Act,1952 vide Chapter I, Section 1(b) and Section 4 of this act. BSEB has been established for holding and conducting an examination at the end of the Secondary School stage, for prescribing course of studies for such examination and for carrying out such other objects and duties as may be considered necessary for the purpose as stated in the Act, Rules and Regulations of the Board.
Board Pattern
Bihar School Examination Board conducts Secondary School Examination twice every year i.e. Annual/Supplementary examinations.
- The Annual examination is normally conducted in the month of February/March. For the Secondary School Examination 2005 approximately 5,48,000 candidates have appeared at the examination.
- Supplementary Examination is generally conducted in the month of July/August. Two categories of students appear at the Supplementary examination i.e. 'A' & 'C'. 'A' means all subjects. 'C' means compartmental i.e. students who want to clear their subjects in which they failed at the annual examination, appear as compartmental examinees.
Apart from the aforesaid Secondary School Examination, the Board also conducts departmental examinations (not on yearly basis) such as
- Diploma in Physical Education
- Certificate in Physical Education
- Teachers Training Examination on such terms and condition as laid down by the State Government.
Board Constitution
It consists of -
1. The Chairman - The Chairman is Principal Administrative Officer of the board.
2. The Director of Secondary Education, Bihar , ex-officio
3. One representative from each of the Universities in Bihar
4. One principal of a Training College to be nominated by the State Government.
5. Two persons nominated by the State Government on the ground that they possess expert knowledge of examination system.

3. Such other officers as may be prescribed by rules made under the Act of 1952.
Duties and Functions of The Board
The Chief duties and Functions of the Board include
- Holding and Conducting an examination at the end of the secondary school education stage
- Prescribing course of studies for such examination
- Carrying out such other objects or duties as may be considered necessary for this purpose
