Engineering Education: The Difficult Time Ahead

Reports, like, "Educating the Engineers of 2020: Adapting Engineering Education to the New Century (2005, USA)" and "Rising above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and employing America for a brighter economic future (2006, USA)" and "Global Dissemination of Innovations in Teaching (USA,2007)" express concerns regarding the rapid changes of the Engineering Education and desire teaching innovations in order to cope with the challenges of the century. Thus, the age-old input-output concept of the engineering education is no more relevant for the new century and now the focus is on the input-output-outcome concept which adjudicates the effectiveness of the teaching programme on the basis of the outcomes (Washington Accord).

• Engineering graduates of the new century must be proficient in science, technology and culture with a thorough understanding of information in all of its forms so that their degrees get through the process of International Benchmarking of Engineering Degrees. 

• Engineering Education of the new century must produce technically excellent and innovative graduates in order to be able to cope with the rapidly changing world and swinging job market due to quick obsolescence of technology.
