Manipal University bagged Golden Peacock awarded for second consecutive year

Manipal university, renowned for green initiatives, has received the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award for the successive second year. M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural gas bestowed the award on the varsity at the occasion of 15th World Congress on Environment Management scheduled in Delhi.

Director of General Services and Purchases, Col Badri Narayanan said on the eco-friendly initiative taken by the university that it is working on conserving energy by introducing solid waste management, sewage water treatment plants and other environment-friendly projects in the campus.

From October, 2012 almost 3,000 saplings has been planted in the campus and the surroundings. And it is planned to plant 7,000 saplings till 2014. The responsibility of maintaining the sapling has been outsourced for two years after which university will take care of all the plantations.

Three sewage treatment plants were established in the varsity  that treat 45 liters of water every day. The water treated by the plants is used in the washrooms of 56 university hostels and gardening. The university also has plants that convert the waste food and vegetable left in the food court into manure. And the manure is further utilized for trees and saplings planted in the campus. Alongside, 40 solar heaters are also present in the university for providing hot water in hostels, medical college and hospital.
