Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is going to be conducted online for all the 21 papers from 2014 for the first time.

A test of time and technical skills to assess a student's understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering GATE is conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs. On the basis of GATE score, the students get admission to M. Tech programs in engineering colleges and universities across the country.

GATE first went online in 2010 for only two papers — textile engineering and fiber science, and mining engineering.

The exam will be of three hours and comprise 65 questions.

Students are advised to work upon their section-wise performance as the exam will assess them on relative performance instead of following the conventional method of absolute marking system.

An objective type test with four answer-options for each question, the test has the provision of negative marking, deducting one-third of the mark for each wrong answer.
