National Cadet Corps (NCC) will be an optional subject for students of Mangalore University at the degree level. The university's academic council on Friday approved the proposal.
This decision will enable students doing BA, BSc and BCom to take NCC as an optional subject along with two other subjects. Till now students joined NCC units in their colleges voluntarily.
Chairing the academic council meeting, Murthy said the main purpose of offering NCC as an optional subject is instilling discipline in students. Regular commissioned service officers with a master's degree from a recognized university in defence and strategic studies or defence management studies, or regular commissioned service officers with a master's degree from the Indian National Defence University, are eligible to teach the subject.
Since commissioned officers heading the NCC units have the above qualification, finding teachers will not be difficult, the VC said. Besides, faculty who work as NCC officers in colleges, too, can teach NCC as a subject. It is not necessary that colleges offering NCC as an optional subject will have to have an NCC unit functioning out of the college.
