Punjab government has given its nod to increase the number of post-graduation (MD/MS) seats in Government Medical College, Patiala. The state has decided to add 72 more seats to existing 133 MD/MS seats in the medical college.

Sources said seats would be added in all clinical and non-clinical departments of the college, which is the only government institute to provide tertiary healthcare to most districts of south Punjab.

According to sources both the government and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, have given approval to add 72 more MD/MS seats. Only approval by the Medical Council of India (MCI) is pending.

According to Principal Dr Singh seats were increased after the Union government had agreed to provide funds under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Apart from the Centre, Punjab would also provide 25% of the total budget for upgrade of the college and hospital, including an increase in the number of seats, he added.
