Around five lakh students from senior secondary schools have opted out of the Class X board examinations to be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education in March 2011.
After the implementation of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for this academic session, the CBSE had made the class X board examinations optional for students.
The total number of students studying in the tenth Class in schools affiliated to the CBSE across the country is 8,23,125. Of these, 2,73,538 students will be taking the class 10 board exams while the rest will appear for the school based term-end Summative II exams that will be conducted in April 2011 under CCE.
Also, apart from the 2.7 lakh students who will be appearing for the Class X boards, another 1.75 lakh students from the tenth standard in secondary schools, which have classes only up to tenth, will also be appearing for the boards.
According to CBSE Chairman Vineet Joshi, the CCE has turned out to be successful as in its first year itself, more students have opted to not give the board examinations compared to those who have. "Although the last date to register for the board examinations is December 18, we are quite sure that there would hardly be any changes in the number of students who have opted to give the exam," he said.
He further informed that the number of students who had registered for class 10 board examinations last year had been 9,02,747 whereas the number this year has gone beyond 10 lakh. "These students who are taking the boards in Class 10 this year are from senior secondary schools only and over 65% of students have opted for their schools' internal exams," he said.
"Since this is the first time that the class 10 boards have been made optional, it is natural for some parents and students to be doubtful regarding the system and hence they have chosen to appear for the examinations. But we are sure that the importance of CCE will be realized gradually," he said.
