Muthiah Polytechnic College is a major technical institute amongst various polytechnic colleges in Cuddalore. It is also referred as Muthiah Polytechnic College Chidambaram and Muthiah Polytechnic College Annamalainagar, in other words they all are varied names of the same institute. It was established on 10th September, 1958 under the leadership of its founder Padmabushan Dr. Rajah Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar, (Rajah of Chettinad) Kt., B.A., D.Litt. who is a Philanthropist and an educationist. It has been established to spread education amongst the poor rural population in the backward District of Cuddalore. It was formed under the trusteeship of Annamalai University and is affiliated to the Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai. The Institution is governed by a Governing Council with the Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University at the helm of affairs. The institute is spread over an area of 17,280 sq. Ft and the premise of the Polytechnic College itself has a specialty. It is designed to suit the nature of various technical workshops and laboratories. Particularly, the north-light roofing is a novelty in institutions of this sort.

Muthiah Polytechnic, Chidambaram has a unique feature in the form of a Diploma Courses in Agricultural Technology which is an interdisciplinary study of the two applied sciences, namely Agriculture and Engineering. It is the only one of its kind in the state and provided education on the modernization of Agricultural implements and maximum utilization of available mechanical power for agriculture purposes.

The polytechnic also offers a Part-Time Diploma Courses of four years duration. This enables the employed people in the neighbourhoods to qualify themselves with a Diploma for their personal as well as professional advancement. And it also facilitates them to pursue part-time Engineering degree courses at the Annamalai University.

Another distinctive feature of the institute is the Shift System. The Shift System was introduced experimentally in the year 1981 in the Muthiah Polytechnic College and due to its impressive performance; it is made permanent in the form of regular increased intake by the Directorate of Technical Education. The Shift System with an annual intake of 120 students was introduced to meet the hectic demand for technical studies.

Student’s Co-operative Store - A students’ Co-operative store functions in a separate building in the Polytechnic premises. The Muthiah Polytechnic College student Co-op. store has been selected as one of the best Students’ co-op. stores in Tamil Nadu.

Industrial Training - The Institution maintains a close and cordial rapport with the local industries offering training and consultancy services of mutual benefits.

Sports and Games Facilities – It offers facilities for Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Badminton, Tennis, Javelin Throw, Discus Throw, High Jump, Broad Jump, Parallel Bar, etc.,

Book Bank – It provide books with the aid of government of Tamil Nadu, for the benefit of poor students.

Temple - There is one Muthu Vinayagar temple at the entrance of the Polytechnic College.

Library - It has 13,608 volumes of books.
