Osmania University, established in 1918, is the seventh oldest in India, the third oldest in south India and the first to be established in the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad. Throughout its existence of over eight decades, it has shown remarkable progress and sustained an integrated development of all faculties. It has significantly contributed to the academic and economic development of not only the region but also of the Country. Osmania University is named after its founder Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, the 7th Nizam of the then princely state of Hyderabad, Osmania University is the first university in the country to impart instruction through the medium of an Indian language i.e., Urdu with English as a compulsory subject.
With a sprawling campus of nearly 1600 acres and buildings of majestic beauty and architectural splendor, Osmania University, is perhaps, the largest higher education system in the Country. It is a home to nearly 300,000 students pursuing their higher studies in its Campus, Constituent, Affiliated Colleges and District Centres. Its faculty and staff number nearly 5000. It is a multi-faculty and multidisciplinary university, offering rich and varied courses in the fields of Humanities, Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Engineering, Technology, Commerce and Business Management, Information Technology and Oriental Languages.
There are 11 faculties and 52 academic departments. The University caters to the educational needs of nearly 4.5 lakhs students by offering 30 courses at the UG level (with 158 combinations) and more than 100 courses at the PG level. M.Phil. and Doctoral programs are offered in almost all the subjects. Prof. G. Ram Reddy Centre for Distance Education has been offering a number of UG, PG and Professional courses numbering around 30 in different disciplines with an enrolment of nearly 65000 students. The university functions through a network of 8 campus colleges, 5 constituent colleges, 8 district PG Colleges and a vast network of affiliated colleges spread over 6 districts of Telangana covering a geographical area of 60000 sq. kms. with a population of over 20 millions.

Students Hostels - Osmania University provides hostel accommodation to over 4500 students hailing from outside Hyderabad city. Soon after admissions are finalised, outstation students have to apply to the Chief Warden through the Heads of the Departments and Principal of the College for hostel accommodation. There are 14 hostels in the University campus and admissions into them are provided,subject to availability. A separate hostel accommodation exists for Engineering students that is close to the College of Engineering. There is a separate hostel-complex with all modem amenities that caters to the needs of to lady students. Students from the Campus as well as Constituent Colleges are provided accommodation in the following hostels that are named after the rivers of India like Godavari, Krishnaveni, Kayeri, Manjeera Hostel , Yamuna Hostel etc.
The hostels have spacious rooms and excellent dining facilities and create an atmosphere of a home-away-from- home. There are two hostels exclusively for girl students that provide accommodation to over thousand girl students.
Library - The University library system consists of a Main Library and College / Department/Seminar Libraries. The University Library coordinates the library system, which links the libraries in all the campus and constituent college libraries. The main library was established in 1918 along with the University. The Library was shifted to the present building, which was inaugurated by Dr.S.Radhakrishnan, the then President of India on 3rd August 1963. The main library building departs from the traditional use of the Indo-Saracenic arch, but it seeks unity with the older buildings of the campus through the dominant pillars of the entrance portal. It stands majestically inviolable on the highest point of the campus, commanding a panoramic view of the unusually beautiful Deccan landscape. The new building has a floor area of 62,000 sq. ft. It is a fitting symbol of the present decade of progress. The Library is divided into a number of Sections basing on the collection and services offered. They are Text Book Section, Periodical Section, Reference Section, Acquisition & Cataloguing Sections. Additionally, it has Vision of Osmania, Manuscript Section, Theses Section, CERL Section & U.N. Section, which are highlighted.
Research & Training - The University established the Centre for Quantitative Methods in the year 1999, Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases, Centre for Energy Technology at University College of Engineering, Osmania University was established during November 1997 with the objective of promoting New and Renewable Sources of Energy, Research and Training Unit in Navigational Electronics etc. are some of the few Research and Training centers.
Foreign Education - Osmania University is a home away from home for more than 650 international students from 46 countries. We have a University Foreign Relations Office as a single window agency that assists in acquiring and disseminating information about various courses of study and opportunities for self-development. It provides a range of services in arranging and finding accommodation and offering remedial instruction in English.
Health Centre - Health Centre offers free medical treatment to students, staff and their families. There are specialists attached to the Centre who offer expert medical advice. The Health Centre situated in the University's main campus, is located near the B-Hostel building. It is open from 9-00 a.m. to 12-00 noon and 4-00 p.m. to 6-00 p.m. on all working days. The Chief Medical Officer, assisted by a team of competent doctors, heads it. Staff and students receive only out-patient treatment at this Centre. Besides this, each of the Constituent Colleges has its own Health Centre located within its premises.
Guest House - The Guest House, situated behind the University's Main Library building, has furnished single and double rooms for accommodating guest of the University. Three spacious dining halls and a very well furnished waiting hall make the Guest House a pleasant place to stay. Another attraction of the Guest House is the cuisine that is served which is typically Mughlai (traditional). Guest who have stayed at this Guest House, carry fond memories of the food served.
Post Office - Osmania University post office is located towards the north of the Arts College. Its front elevation is a reflection of the Arts College building. It has the usual mailing and other facilities including registration, sale of stamps, speed post, money order, saving bank etc. It functions from 9-00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on all working days. Another sub-post office is also located near the Academic Staff College, Osmania University.
Banking Facility - The State Bank of Hyderabad, Osmania University Branch, is housed in the ground floor of the Arts College building. It has extension counters at the Centre for Distance Education, Examination Branch, University Colleges of Engineering and CIEFL. All fee transactions pertaining to Osmania University have to be made through this bank. The bank functions from 10-30 a.m. to 2-30 p.m. every working day.
