About University of Hyderabad

The University of Hyderabad, a premier institution of post graduate teaching and research in the country, was established by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 39 of 1974) on 2nd October, 1974 as a Central University, Wholly financed by the University Grants Commission. The university is a member of the 'Association of Indian Universities' (AIU), the 'Association of Commonwealth Universities' (ACU) and 'International Council for Distance Education'. The University’s scenic, and serene campus is spread over a vast stretch of land measuring about 2,000 acres, 20 kms from the city of Hyderabad. The University also has a city campus ‘The Golden Threshold’ the residence of the late Sarojini Naidu which was bequeathed to the University by her daughter, the late Padmaja Naidu. All the Schools of the University, Departments and Centres are located on the main campus in Gachibowli.

Facilities

Hostel Accommodation - There are altogether 10  hostels on the campus at present, of which seven are for men and the rest three are for women.  Three men's hostels ('A', 'B' and 'D') are conventionally meant for those admitted to different P.G courses, while Men's hostel 'C', 'E', 'F' and 'G' are meant for M.Phil students, Research scholars (Ph.D), M.Tech, students and M.B.A students, respectively. Of the three ladies hostels, LH-I and LH-III are meant for P.G students, and LH-II is for Ph.D, M.Phil and M.Tech students. The University cannot provide hostel accommodation to all the students admitted into various courses in view of the limited number of seats. Of the total number of seats in the hostels, 22.5% are reserved for candidates belonging to S.C/S.T. and 3% for Physically challenged students.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Library
- The library has a collection of more than 3 lakhs books & back volumes of journals. The library subscribes to around 700 periodicals, popular magazines & newspapers in English and Indian languages. The library also subscribes to over 18,000 e-journals from several publishers with the help of UGC-INFONET. All the in-house library operations are fully computerised using VTLS-Virtua software, including a web OPAC and Electronic Security gate. The Library is one of the scanning centres under the Universal Digital Library project of the Carnegie Mellon University, USA.

Computer Centre - It currently provides a 24 x 7 service with 68 Mbps (1:1) internet leased line access for teaching and research needs of the university. The University of Hyderabad is connected to Internet Via V-SAT/ Microwave Link/ 2 Mbps Fibre Optic Link. The University is one of the Point of Presence centres of Education and Research Network. E-mail/ Internet services are extended to internal users and also to various research organizations such as CCMB, CDAC, CMET, DRDL, IDRBT, NFC, etc.

SIP - Study in India Program is aimed at overseas students who have proficiency in English and meet the special prerequisites of the courses desired.

SIP courses can be classified under five heads:

  • Regular University courses in different schools involving lectures, seminars, assignments and examinations.
  • SIP courses, especially designed for foreign students.
  • Independent/directed study where a faculty member supervises readings, field study, and research focused on some topic.
  • Courses involving practice/performance, e.g. Indian Classical Dance, Theatre, Sitar, Painting, Sculpture, etc.
  • Non-credit courses such as Yoga, Tabla, Kathak, etc.

Admission of International Students - International Students can apply for admission any time during the year. However, the deadline for being considered for any academic year (which generally begins in mid-July) is April 1 of that year [for the year 2010-11, the deadline is April 15]. The decision of Admissions Committee will be intimated to the candidates by May 31. The application along with the documents (scanned copies) can be sent by e-mail or by post to the Director, International Affairs, SIP Building, University of Hyderabad, Professor C.R. Rao Road, Gachibowli, Hyderabad – 500046.

Health Centre - The Health Centre, managed by a team of doctors, supported by nurses and other para medical staff caters to the basic needs of the campus community.  Any expenses related to medical emergencies and hospitalization will be borne by the parents/guardians of the students concerned. At the time of admission, an undertaking to this effect has to be given by the parents/guardians of the students. A scheme for health insurance which is mandatory for all the students exists in the University to provide health care and to cover expenses towards in-patient treatment subject to a maximum of Rs. 15,000. All the students must apply for  medical insurance in the prescribed form by a notified date. The insurance fee of Rs 260/- per annum is payable at the time of admission in July for freshers and along with the fees for the Monsoon Semester in the case of ongoing students. Those who do not pay the fees and do not submit the copy of the Chalan in the office of the Dean, Students’ Welfare will not be eligible for any kind of medical aid and their enrolment in the University will stand automatically cancelled.

Specialized Centres

1.  University Centre for Earth and Space Sciences - The Centre offers one and two years Post Graduate Programmes in collaboration with the National Geophysical Research Institute, National  Remote Sensing Agency, Atomic Minerals Directorate  and MSPL-Baldota  Industry;  as well as a number of highly focused short term refresher courses to enable cadres to update their knowledge and skills and improve their employment opportunities. Most importantly, they would have the competence to develop new cutting-edge technologies.The Centre currently executes research projects in water harvesting,  conservation and recycling, ocean models and climate forecasts, cyber infrastructure, mineral exploration, earth’s crust and mantle and metallogeny  and environmental geochemistry (Funding  :UPE, UGC, INCOIS – DOD, Indo – US Forum).

2.  Centre for Cognitive Science - The Centre has a well-equipped laboratory with ERP and eye-tracking facilities, and offers research programs in cognitive science at the M.Phil. and doctoral levels. It proposes to offer a five-year integrated interdisciplinary master's program in cognitive science in the near future. The centre is a major participant in the DST National Initiative in Cognitive Science. It has received generous assistance from the University Grants Commission and the Department of Science & Technology towards major research projects and infrastructural facilities.

3.  Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials - ACRHEM is a DRDO supported Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials, at the University of Hyderabad. This is the first Centre of its kind by DRDO in an Academic Institution. For more info -  http://www.acrhem.org/

4.  Centre for Modelling Simulation and Design - MSD has been accorded an Academic Status by the University and  Department of Science & Technology recognized CMSD as National High Performance Computing Facility. Currently, CMSD is a  2 Tflops computing facility and is expected to grow to a 7 Tflops, by positioning a 500 node cluster, by the end of this year.

5.  Centre for Health Psychology - It is an autonomous Centre of the University. University of Hyderabad is the first University in the country to start an autonomous unit called Centre for Health Psychology. The Centre has innovative approaches to teaching through movies, novels and role play. Movies are screened and used for personality analysis & diagnosis of psychopathology. Discussions are held on and therapeutic approaches.The students are taught micro skills of counselling through role play. Experiential learning is given emphasis. As part of it the students have field trips to organizations and families to get an exposure to real life situations. This training is found to reduce the gap between theory and practice. It also provides Counselling to the University Students.

The Centre for Health Psychology offers specialized courses in Psychology:

  • Five Year Integrated MSc. in Health Psychology Jointly offered along with School of Medical Sciences.
  • Ph.D Programme.
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology.

6.  Special Centre for Integrated Studies - CIS offers 5 year Integrated Master’s Degree courses in several subjects for imparting specialised education to the young boys and girls on completion of their  +2  level of education. The Centre offers  5-year integrated  Master’s Degree  courses in Science,  Humanities and Social Science subjects.

Research Institutes

  • Institute of Life Sciences - ILS is a premier research organization founded through a public–private partnership initiative.   • AIMSCS - The C R Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS) is being setup with the objective of  promoting research and advanced studies in mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and allied subjects and engaged in activities that further these objectives. The University of Hyderabad and AIMSCS will jointly undertake collaboration in research, teaching, consultancy work and extension activities in the subjects of  Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and allied subjects.
  • AMDISA - Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia is a SAARC recognized body, established with the initiatives of leading management Schools in the SAARC region. AMDISA promotes Management Education and Management Development in the SAARC region. The mission of AMDISA is to network M-Schools and Management Development Centres and promote partnerships between the M-Schools, leading managers and policy administrators for enhancing the quality and  effectiveness of Management Education and Management Development in South Asia.
  • National Institute of Animal Biotechnology.
  • Institute of Health Science Education and Translation Research.

Physical Education - The University campus is the centre for games, sports, recreational activities, and for several competitive programmes. There is a multi-purpose playground on the campus for cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, tennis, basket­ball and athletic events.  Modern facilities for physical conditioning are available at the New Indoor Gymnasium along with facilities for Table Tennis, Shuttle Badminton, Chess and Caroms. Both intramural and extramural competitions are planned in such a way that students are able to participate regularly in games and sports activities throughout the year. The University is a member of the Inter University Sports Board of India and its teams participate in zonal and all India Inter University tournaments regularly.

ASC - Academic Staff College is a constituent unit of the University offering Orientation, Refresher and need-based courses for lecturers working in Universities and Colleges.

University Outreach Programme, Literacy - The University under its Outreach Programme is making an attempt to build a literate environment around its campus. It launched a total literacy campaign for the non literates of 24 wards of Serilingampally Municipality on Oct 2, 2003. Within one year it could turn 6% of non literates into literates.

Jan Shikshan Sansthan - It is an autonomous institution sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. It has adopted a holistic and integrated approach in implementing all its programmes with voluntary spirit. Before attempting the assigned tasks of literacy, general education and skill development, it ensured the redressal of various socio-economic problems confronted by its clientèle.

Some of it's activities are:

  1. Bonded Labour Rehabilitation Programme.
  2. Child Labour Elimination and Rehabilitation.
  3. Universalisation of Elementary Education.
  4. Women Empowerment.

CWS - Centre for Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary programme in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Performing arts, Communication, Management and the Natural Sciences.

Teaching and Research:

  1. The Centre offers an M.Phil programme in Gender Studies. This consists of four courses, Introduction to Gender Studies, Feminist Theories, Methodologies and the Women’s Movement, Gender Science and Technology and a Seminar Course in the first semester and in the second semester the students have to write a thesis on their chosen area.
  2. The Centre members also offer different courses in the other departments of the University. Some of these include Women in Indian Civilization, Women and Partition, Women’s Movements in India, Feminist Political Theory and Sociology of Gender, and Gender and Development.
  3. The Centre plan to offer orientation and refresher courses in Gender Studies.

Campus Guest House - The University campus has a well furnished Guest House in addition to the participants hostel (for participants of Academic Staff College refresher and orientation courses) and visiting scholars Guest house.

Students Welfare - The office of the Dean of Students Welfare looks after the welfare of the students with active support from the elected representatives of the students, faculty and administration. A Student Counselling Service by professionals is available in the University Health Centre.  In case of any student requiring parental guidance, his/her parents will be informed accordingly. There is a Students’ Union which caters to the students’ interests and promotes cultural and sports activities. The elections to the Students’ Union are conducted by the students themselves.

Committee on violence against women and sexual harassment
- As suggested by the UGC, a Committee has been constituted with Dean, Students’ Welfare, Chief Warden, representative from Women Studies Centre, Women faculty members, Women students, Students’ Union and Teachers’ Association as members.

Other Amenities
- The University campus has a Shopping Centre, Food Court, Post Office, BSNL Office, SBI ATM facility etc.

Hindi Cell - In pursuance of the Official Language policy of the Government of India the University has established the Hindi Cell under the  Registrar’s Office. The main activity of the Cell is implement the official language policy of the union, under the guidance of  Official Language Implementation Committee of the University.

Achievements

  • The University opted for a rigorous evaluation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission.  The apex Council of NAAC awarded the top grade of A ***** to the University (on a five-point scale A* to A*****).
  • The University Grants Commission has identified a  few Universities and granted them the status of ‘Universities with Potential for Excellence’, with the help of a high power Committee. The objective of this initiative was to provide these select institutions with augmented inputs, including additional funds, to sustain and enhance quality  of education and research. Based on the evaluation and recommendations of this committee, the University Grants Commission declared the University of Hyderabad as a ‘University with Potential for Excellence’. The University was sanctioned a grant of Rs. 30 crore under this scheme for inter-facial Studies & Research and Holistic Development for a period of 5 years (2002-2007).
  • The University has also been rated by the NISSAT (National Information System for Science and Technology) of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, as the only University under the  ‘High Output – High Impact’ category among the top 50 institutions in India with publications in citation - index journals.
  • The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India  sanctioned over Rupees four crores under FIST (Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology) to the four Science Schools of the University to augment research facilities.
  • Indira Gandhi Memorial Library of University of Hyderabad is the first University Library in India to computerize all its in-house operations and services, the first in installing an Electronic security gate with magnetic detector, the first to subscribe to e-journals, the first in undertaking the computerization programs of other libraries on turnkey basis, the first in starting a Post-Graduate Diploma in Library Automation and Networking (PGDLAN), the first start Digitization of books in India and the first University Library in India to become the governing member of the OCLC, USA.
