The Medical College (Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences) was established in 1995. The medical college is recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The facilities and faculty are as per the norms of the Medical Council of India. The Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT) the sponsoring society for HIHT University was founded by a great yogi, scientist, philosopher, philanthropist, researcher, and writer, H.H. Dr. Swami Rama. The Medical Institute has been awarded the status of a Deemed University by the Govt. of India vide Notification Number F.9-43/2006-U.3 (A) dated 6th June 2007 under Section 3 of University Grants Commission Act 1956. Subsequently, the name of the Deemed University was changed from Swami Rama Vidyapeeth to HIHT University. For all the courses that were conducted in the institute prior to the Deemed University Status (until 2007) the institute was affiliated to HNB Garhwal University. HIHT University offers both undergraduate and post-graduate courses. The institute is currently the Only Post Graduate Medical Institute in Uttarakhand. A 750-bed multi-specialty tertiary care hospital is attached to the University for the teaching and training purposes of the student of the University. The daily average OPD is 1519.89 and the IPD occupancy percentage is 86.80%. All the students are housed in on-campus modern hostel accommodations. The hostels provide a safe and disciplined lifestyle to students. Housing is provided for undergraduate medical students in five hostels (separate hostels for boys and girls) comprising of 600 rooms. Postgraduate students are placed in studio apartments with cooking facilities. Relatives of patients can stay in a comfortable forty-room residence, Nanak Sarai, adjacent to the hospital. The Department of Medical Education (DME) ensures that the faculty is up to date on creative and innovative trends in medical education. The DME organizes orientations for new faculty, workshops, self-assessment exercises, and Continuing Medication Education / Case Presentations every fortnight that includes presentations by guest lecturers in various specialty areas from India and abroad.
Location - The University is situated in the lush green valley of Dehradun in Uttarakhand on the Rishikesh-Dehradun highway adjacent to the Dehradun airport.
Transportation - The University is well connected by road, rail and air. The nearest railway station is Doiwala which is 6 Kilometres away. Other important railheads are Haridwar (35 Km) and Dehradun (23 Km). The Jolly Grant Airport is situated in the vicinity of HIHT (1 km).

Facilities
Hostel - For undergraduate students, the University has separate hostels for boys and girls.
Library - A well-equipped Central library with about 11,000 books of different specialties, 72 Foreign Journals and 70 Indian Journals of different specialties is available for faculty, staff and students. Facilities such as access to Internet resources, online journals, and e-learning are some of the special features. There are separate group study and private study areas in the library. A large collection of reading materials such as books, periodicals back volumes, project/thesis, reports, seminar/conference proceedings, etc. are available.
Classrooms - The University has five lecture theatres Gallery types. The capacity of these lecture halls is 200 and 250 students. Besides these lecture halls, every department has Class Rooms, Tutorial Rooms, and Seminar Rooms for teaching and training purposes. The University has total of forty-two classrooms. Since every department has individual classrooms there is no requirement of any shift. The University does not run any Distance Learning Programme.
Laboratory - The University has total of Thirty-Five laboratories. These thirty-five laboratories of the University are equipped with high-value equipment. This equipment are used by the students and the faculties.
Transportation - Daily transport to and from Rishikesh and Dehradun is provided for staff members residing off-campus.
Civil Amenities - These include a daily needs shop, and utility center with photocopying, fax, computer and email facilities, along with medical books and supplies for the students.
Mess - The Royal Mess located in the hospital serves the students, staff, patients and visitors with tasty and nutritious food.
Conference Hall - University is also having a conference hall equipped with a recording system and LCD screens. It can hold 40 to 50 people at a time.
Auditorium - The University has its own auditorium for conducting Workshops, Seminars, Cultural events, Annual functions, Counselling and various examinations, etc. In the last two years the auditorium of the University is used for various cultural events.
Playground - The university has a very big playground for the students. The University held sports meet during their annual fest "Himutsav" which lasts for 15 days.
Research Activities - Research is an integral part of the academic activities of the University. All the departments are actively involved in research. Faculty members take active participation in various regional, national and international conferences. The department host seminars, workshops, and conferences of regional, national and international level from time to time.
Guest House - To facilitate a comfortable stay for the visitors, the University has a Guest house. A well-furnished lounge for visitors with cable Television facility is provided. The kitchen of the Guest house serves visitors with delicious "home cooked" type food at affordable rates in the comfortable Dining Hall.
Shopping - A daily needs shop is available within the campus for necessary items. The canteen offers a range of snacks, beverages, small gifts and other consumables.
Bank - A nationalized bank (SBI) runs its branch at the premises making it convenient for students and staff to transact business in the campus itself. It also has the facility of ATM within the campus premises.
Continuing Education Programs - Continuing education programs are conducted through the departments of medical education at regular intervals. The Institute encourages the holding of National and State level Conferences, Workshops and CME programs. To date, the Institute has organized 3 National and 4 state-level conferences and various CME and workshops.
Vidya School - An English-medium preschool, "Vidya School", run by the Rural Development Institute, helps prepare the youngest members of the University community to begin their educational journey. Plans are underway for the construction of a large International School on the campus.
Sports - Regular sports activities and competitions are organized for the staff and students, creating a congenial atmosphere. Vast playgrounds and courts have been provided for sports as well as games such as basketball, volleyball and tennis, among others. Students participate in Inter College tournaments at State and National levels. Annual sports are organized for staff and students every year. The tennis courts and cricket field are rarely empty. HIHT's cricket team plays regularly scheduled matches with neighboring teams. The jogging track, amidst beautiful, flowering ornamental shrubs and trees winding around the dancing fountain is a favorite of the residents.
Scholarships / Awards - The faculty, staff and students are awarded 'Best Employee Award' annually for their excellent performance in their respective fields.
Science of Joyful Living - The Science of Joyful Living is a seminar based on the teachings of H.H Dr Swami Rama of the Himalayas, a great yogi, scientist, author, teacher and humanitarian. Swami Rama taught that the purpose of life is to be free of pains, miseries and bondages. Much of our suffering is self-created and a vast majority of diseases are of psychosomatic origin. Research has shown that stress is a major cause of accidents and many illnesses: headaches, depression, anxiety, heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory diseases and digestive disorders. In this seminar, the interaction between the biological, physiological, psychological and philosophical dimensions will be explored. Harmonious integration of body, breath, mind and spirit will be reinforced through simple practicum. The seminar consists of several inter-related modules. Each module includes a lecture delivered using multi-media aids, a practicum and time for interaction with the faculty. The seminar can be tailored into a one or two day seminar and can be customized to the needs of a particular group or organization. Program fee: Rs. 500 per day (includes food and lodging).
Extra-Curricular Activities - In keeping with the HIHT philosophy, students are provided all facilities to participate actively in several extra-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to form cultural associations with focus on music, elocution, debate, poetry, literature, etc. Staff and Students actively participate in regular cultural and extra-curricular activities. An Annual cultural program is arranged every year. A Student magazine "HIMJYOTI" is released at the Annual day celebration.
Co-Curricular Activities - Several guest lectures, seminars, conferences and workshops are conducted on a variety of subjects. Eminent experts in various fields are invited to participate in these programs. Students are also given opportunities to respond to invitations from other institutions and various organizations to participate in their activities.
National Convention of Medical Library Association of India - HIHT University organized the Annual National Convention of Medical Library Association of India (MLAI) 28-30 January 2010. The 3-day convention started with lamp lighting and Guru Vandana. Vice-Chancellor Shri Vijay Dhasmana was Chief Guest. Dr.V. Chauhan Dean HIHT University, and Dr. Raj Kumar Chauhan, National Secretary MLAI, graced the occasion. More than 50 medical librarians from all parts of India participated in the convention. There were over 41 full papers in five technical sessions during the meeting on different software for medical libraries, emerging technologies, and digital and virtual libraries. Presentations by different publishers included anti-theft techniques (RFID), bar codes, evidence-based medical librarianship, and marketing of library services. Dr. Anil Kumar Rawat, Chairman of the conference, and Mr. Yogesh Sharma, Organizing Secretary, along with the Chairman of the Library Committee, Dr. Sanjay Dvivedi, put their effort to make it a grand success.
