Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is a national institute for the study and development of space science, located at Valiamala, Kerala. It was inaugurated on 14 September 2007 and offers the complete range of undergraduate, post graduate, doctoral programmes with specific focus to space science, technology and applications. IIST is sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the Department of Space, Government of India. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, is the Chancellor of IIST. IIST was registered as a Society under the Travancore - Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955. It received the approval of the Union Cabinet on 26 April, 2007 and it was formally inaugurated on 14 September 2007. IIST received the recognition of UGC as a ‘Deemed to be University’ under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956.
Location - The main campus, planned in the picturesque location in Valiamala is located about 18km from Trivandrum Central Railway Station.

Hostel Facilities - IIST provides hostels for students and scholars which are named after the mythological ‘nakshatras’. There are Dhruva Dhanista, Chitra Revathi, Rohini Ashwini, Ardra Phalguni and Anuradha Arundathi. These are located in a peaceful part of the IIST campus, with proximity to canteens, cafe, gymnasium and the medical centre.
Library Facilities - Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Library has a well equipped collection of books, journals and e-resources from all major subject areas. All operations of the library are fully computerised and the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is accessible from anywhere in the campus on 24x7 basis. There are also E-resources, which include ACM Digital Library, AIAA, AIP, APS, Annual Reviews, ASME, Cambridge Online, IEL Online (IEEE), JSTOR, Optic InfoBase, Oxford Journals, Royal Society of Chemistry, and Science Direct.
Computing Facilities - The Institute provides good facilities for computing. There are Data Centre (High Performance cluster server); Storage; High Performance Computing Lab and Programming Lab.
Sports Facilities - The Institute also offers modern sports facilities for the mental and physical development of students. There are Sports’ clubs run by students include the IIST Cricket League and the IIST Badminton Club, apart from clubs for basketball and football.
Health Facilities - IIST has a well experienced medical team and the services are available to students and staff throughout the working hours. There is also a clinic which has been established in the campus with sufficient medicines and equipment to take care of the day medical needs.
