National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal was founded in October 10, 1959 by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It is the first among the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges established in India. It started as the Regional Engineering College, Warangal (RECW) and was initially affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University. Later in 1976, the college got its affiliation from Kakatiya University. Finally in 2002, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal was accorded the status of Deemed University and was renamed as NIT Warangal. It has Eleven Academic Departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences. NIT Warangal is a residential Institute with nearly 200 faculty, 2500 students and 600 administrative and supporting staff and is a self-contained residential campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 acres. It is an Institute of National Importance awarding bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in engineering, technology, basic sciences and management.

Facilities
Hostels - Almost all the students reside inside the Campus. NIT Warangal has collectively sixteen boys Hostels and two ladies Hostels, latter being separately compounded with security. Recently new hostels have been constructed with 1000 and 1600 capacity with all amenities. and an international hall of residence has been constructed for the students from abroad with capacity of 500 occupants.
Library - The Library has campus LAN connectivity through the Computer Centre and is connected to Web Server. 50 Systems providing network facility are installed for browsing. The MHRD, GOI New Delhi set-up a consortia based subscription to electronic resources for technical education system named as INDEST (Indian Digital Library in Engineering, Science and Technology) and received about 2000 on-line journals

Laboratories - The Institute has nearly 100 Laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning with facilities for all the Departments of the Institute.
TEQIP - The Institute is facilitated with 'Technical Education Quality Improvement Program' of Government of India aims to up-scale and support ongoing efforts of Government of India to create an environment in which engineering institutions selected under the Programme can achieve their own targets for excellence and sustain the same with autonomy and accountability, support development plans including synergistic networking and services to community and economy for achieving higher standards and to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the technical education management system.
Training and Placement - The Department provides a launch pad for students to make it to the various organizations in the fields of core industries, softwares etc. The biggest names in the corporate world visit the campus on a regular basis, with enviable recruitment offers. The Department maintains an excellent rapport with a wide spectrum of companies spread across various industry sectors. About 120 - 150 companies visit the campus every year.
Extra Curricular Activities - NIT Warangal holds many Technical and Cultural Events throughout the year.
