In the erstwhile Hyderabad State, Karimnagar had the distinction of starting the first Higher Secondary School in the year 1944-45. With a gap of eleven years the district had the distinction of starting the First Degree College in this region in the year 1956. After passing of time i.e., two and a half decades the Satavahana Institute of Post Graduate Studies was started with M.A. Economics and M.Com in 1980. In the academic year 1989-90, the Institute became the PG Centre of Osmania University, Hyderabad and subsequently in the year 1993 it was transferred to the administrative control of Kakatiya University, Warangal. In the month of August, 2008 the PG Centre of Kakatiya University at Karimnagar has been upgraded as Satavahana University. With the upgradation of the Post-Graduation College to Satavahana University, during the academic year 2008-2009, three new PG courses i.e., Urdu, Chemistry and Sociology were introduced. The University has presently eight courses i.e., M.A. in Economics, Urdu, Sociology, M.Com, M.B.A., M.C.A., and M.Sc.(Chemistry). At present the PG College of Satavahana University is located in sprawling area of 42.2 acres at Left Flank of Manair Dam of Karimnagar district. The university is named after the 'Satavahana Empire' which ruled over Kotilingala (Karimnagar) in Andhra Pradesh. Satavahanas are credited for establishing peace in the country, resisting the onslaught of foreigners after the decline of Mauryan empire.
Location and Transportation - Karimnagar is located on the banks of Maneru river, a tributary of the Godavari river. Karimnagar is situated 162 km north of Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. It is 70 kilometres from Warangal and 150 kilometres from Nizamabad. Karimnagar town is connected by a single broad gauge railway line with the Main Line (North-South or New Delhi-Chennai) at Peddapalli (35 kilometres) to the north-east and Jagityal (48 kilometres) to the north-west.
