HHD- 121    Theories of Human Development and Behavior

Objectives:

This course will enable the students to :

  • To make the students aware about different theories of human development and Psychology.
  • To make the students aware about the application of theories in present context of development.

  • Historical perspective in the trends in theoretical and empirical approaches to child study and its relevance for pedagogy, psychotherapy and intervention programs.

Objectives:

This course will enable the students to :

  • Understand the role of heredity and environment in development.
  • Understand problems and solutions regarding child bearing.

  • Principles of genetics- Cell organization, mitosis, meiosis, mendelism- linkage and cross over, gene- mutation.

  • Pregnancy- Physiological and psychological changes, Placenta- functions, fetal blood circulation; Amniotic fluid- functions.
  • Hormonal changes in pregnancy and lactation.
  • Complications during pregnancy and child birth.
  • Prenatal Development.- Stages, critical influence, teratogens.
    • Birth process- methods of delivery, birth complications, uses of analgesia, anesthesia, oxytocics.

Infancy

  • Prematurity – Preterm, small for date, Impact of prematurity and birth weight on personality.
  • The neonate upto 4 weeks-Physical, physiological, cognitive, social capabilities.

Objectives:

This course will enable the students to :

  • Understand an infant and his capabilities.
  • Assess the physiological status of an infant.
  • Promote developmental activities of an infant.

Contents:

  • Observing neonate- premature/ full term, low birth/ normal- making comparisons, assessment of new born.
  • Observation and care of high risk neonate in ICU. Documentation of care taken and medical facilities provided in hospital and home.
  • Recording all round development of infants.
  • Observation of neonatal reflexes.
  • Evaluation of sensory capabilities of infants.
  • Scientific evaluation of birth related practices in local community- report writing.
  • Formulating activities for infants to promote development- Physical, motor, cognitive, language and emotional.

 

HHD- 126  Family Nutrition and Health ( Theory )

Objectives:

This course will enable the students to :

  • To create awareness about complications, psychological & physiological changes and nutritional requirement during life span.
  • Achieve knowledge about importance of breast milk, supplementary & weaning food and health and nutrition of mother , child and family.
  • Assess physical development of an individual according to the standards.

Contents:

Unit- I

  • Definition of food, nutrition and health, Inter relationship between nutrition and health, factors affecting food habits and dietary patterns.
  • Basic Principles of Planning and Healthy Diet – Nutritional assessment, RDA for Indians, food groups and balanced diet, dietary guides.

Unit- II

  • Brief Review of Nutrients in general- Carbohydrate, protein, fat; Vitamins-A,C, D, E, K, B - complex-B1, B2, Niacin, folic acid, minerals- calcium, iron, iodine, zinc, water- functions, sources.
  • Energy balance and body composition – Effect of aging, body weight management and health.
  • Nutrition through life cycle- Infancy, childhood and adolescence, adulthood and later years – nutritional need, nutrition / health problems and intervention.
  • Malnutrition- causes and prevention.

Unit- III

  • Nutrition for special groups – Pregnancy and lactation– effect of nutrition on the outcome of pregnancy and lactation performance, nutritional need.
  • Major nutritional problems of India and nutrition intervention programs to combat diarrhea, PEM, anemia, vitamin A deficiency, goitre, alcoholic abuse.
  • Inborn errors of metabolism.
  • Methods of studying growth and body size–anthropometric measurements – Height, weight, mid upper arm circumference, skin fold thickness, head and chest circumference, waist and hip circumference.

Unit -IV

  • Diseases – obesity, diabetes, heart disease and strokes, arthritis, and cancer, CVD, gout, ARF, CRF, hepatitis, cirrhosis. -dietary recommendations.
  • Consumer Education - Consumers concern about food and water, food adulteration and food labeling .

  • Effect and assessment of nutrition on various developments of child - cognitive, emotional, physical, social, psychological.
  • Breast milk- composition, comparison and superiority with animal milk, importance of breast milk for infant growth, development and health.
  • Weaning- Method, bottle feeding, supplements for formula feeding, bottle feeding problems, psychological impact of weaning.

 

HHD- 127   Family Nutrition and Health ( Practical )

Objectives:

This course will enable the students to :

  • Assess the nutritional status of an individual.
  • Plan and prepare healthy diet for an individual.
  • Change diet according to the physiological condition of an individual.

Contents:

  • Assessment of Nutritional status of pre-school child and self ; using the data of body size measurements – Height, weight, MUAC, SFT, head and chest circumference, waist and hip and calculation of indices for interpretation.
  • Formulation and preparation of weaning and supplementary foods for infants and children
  • Planning regular diets for – Pre School and school children, adolescence, adults (including elderly), pregnant women and lactating mothers. Planning and preparing breakfast and lunch box.
  • Planning and preparation of nutrient dense recipes to increase energy, protein, vitamin A, iron, and calcium content of the diet.
  • Visit to ICDS center and schools to observe mid day meal pattern, primary health centre and maternal health centre- Blue print development.

Objective:

This course will enable the students to:

  • To understand the role of statistics and computer applications in research.
  • To apply statistical techniques to research data for analyzing and interpreting data carefully.

Unit - I

  • Introduction of Statistics. Classifications and Tabulation of data. Frequency Distribution.
  • Diagrammatic(one- dimensional and two- dimensional) and Graphical presentation of data( Histogram, Frequency Polygon, Frequency curve and ogives)
  • Measure of Central Tendency- Mean, Median and Mode, their properties, merits and demerits. Measure of Dispersion- Range, Quartile Deviation, Mean Deviation and standard deviation.

Unit- II

  • Concept of Probability. Properties of Normal Probability Curve and its applications.
  • Correlation Analysis- Definition and concept, types and measures of studying correlation (Karl Pearson’s coefficient of correlation, its assumptions, properties, merits and demerits, Spearman’s Rank correlation coefficient)
  • Regression Analysis- Definition, concept, uses and properties. Least Square Methods, Regression Coefficients, Fitting of Regression lines.

Sampling Distribution and Standard Error. Elements of Testing a Statistical Hypothesis- Formulation of the problem, Types of errors . Level of significance, Large sample tests for proportions, Single mean and difference in two means.

Small sample tests- Application of t- test for testing the significance of single mean & difference in two means ( independent and paired-t). Chi-square test for testing normal population variance. Test for goodness of fit, independence of attributes using 2x2 and rxc contingency tables).

  • Techniques of research in Human Development –Time span approach-cross sectional, longitudinal, sequential approach across the age span- children, adolescents, children with special needs, youth women and elderly.
  • Methods of studying behaviour – Observation, Interview and Questionnaire, Case study methods – Types, Factors involved in preparation and administration, Advantages and disadvantages of techniques, Case history- report writing.

HHD- 328   Research Project/Dissertation

Objectives:

Conduction of innovative and fruitful research in various fields of Human Development. It shall include research in the fields of on going programmes of agencies / ECE / Counseling / Special Education / Old age ,Women and Child Welfare / Psychology etc.

 

HHD- 329   Internship

Objectives

  • To provide hands on experiences by working independently as Human Development personnel in an agency / programme setting.
  • To be able to apply knowledge of human development principles and programme in the field setting.

In the end of II Semester, students will undergo internship training of 45 days by participation in on going programmes of agencies / institutions and interaction with agency personnel at all levels- in aECE centers/ Counseling centers/ Special schools/ / NGOs / Old age home/ Women and child welfareprogram or organization etc. so that they get to understand the existing working practices, conditions and acquire an in depth technical know how. The student shall prepare a report on the visit made to theorganization. She will submit the report and will be required to make the presentation of the workfollowed by viva-voce. The students will be required to get the certificate regarding successful training.

Evaluation: Panel of examiners consisting of Head of the department, and two other examiners appointed by the Principal shall conduct a vice-voce and evaluate the reports. The students will be graded accordingly.

HHD- 421   Introduction To Guidance And Counseling

Objectives:

This course will enable the students to :
