Semester – I

PSY 121 -Cognitive Psychology-I

Objectives :

To acquaint students with the processes involved in cognition and to develop critical understanding about cognitive processes.

Introduction : Historical Background : Emergence of modern cognitive Psychology : Place of Cognitive Psychology in cognitive science. Approaches : Information Processing, Ecological, Connectionist and evolutionary perspective.

Attention : Selective Attention : Filter theory, Attenuation theory, late selection theory, multimode theory; Attention Capacity and Mental effort, Nueropsychological studies of attention; automaticity and effect of practice; divided attention.

PSY 425 (Group A) : Psychological Treatment of Mental Disorders

Objectives :

To familiarize students with the therapeutic intervention and train them in skills of therapy.

Unit I

Introduction to Psychological Treatment : Concept, definition, nature and scope of psychotherapies and counselling, goals and effectiveness of psychotherapies and counselling.

Unit II

Individual Therapy : Psychoanalytic psychotherapy; client centered therapy, cognitive therapy; logo therapy, gestalt therapy.

Unit III

Group Therapy : Group psychotherapy, psychodrama and Transactional analysis.

Unit IV

Behavior Modification Techniques : Systematic desensitization, Flooding and Implosive therapy, contingency management, Token economy, Aversion, Modelling.

Unit V

Cross Cultural Therapies: Zen, Buddhism and indigenous system in India : use of yoga, meditation, hypnosis, bio-feed back and autogenic training.

 

PSY 425 (Group B) – Assessment in Counselling and Guidance

Objectives :

  • To equip students with various standardized and non-standardized techniques of assessment in the field of counselling and guidance.
  • To train the students for administration of tests and interpretation of scores.

Unit I

Nature of Psychological Assessment : Interview and observation, taking case history, selection of tests, implications of psychological test results, ethics of psychological testing.

Unit II

Assessment of Aptitude: Differential Aptitude Test, General Aptitude Test Battery; Assessment of Interests: Chatterjee’s Non Language Preference Record. Intelligence : Wechsler’s Adult Intelligence Scale- Revised, Bhatia’s Performance Test of Intelligence.

Unit III

The Objective Assessment of Personality – High School Personality Questionnaire, 16 Personality Factors, Eysenck’s Personality Inventory. The projective assessment of personality Thematic Apperception Test, Rosenzweig Picture Frustration Study, Sentence Completion Test.

Unit IV

Behavioral Techniques and Tests : Behavioral Questionnaires, self monitoring, problem checklist observation in natural environment.

Unit V

Report Writing : Writing case study reports preparing a profile of individual and group career guidance in the report form.

 

PSY 425 (Group C) – Issues in Industrial Psychology

Objectives :

To understand the concepts, nature and principles of industrial psychology.

Unit I

Recruitment and Selection : Recruitment factors; Theories, steps  of recruitment process and policy. Sources of recruitment. Recruitment in organization, selection procedure and policy. Steps in selection procedure : Application Blank, weighted application blank, biodata, Biographical inventory, physical examination and reference checks.

Unit II

Development and Training : Nature and scope of industrial training; distinction between training and development; Need and importance of training; Training methods – on-job, off- job; Developing a training program; improving effectiveness of training.

Unit III

Industrial Morale : Definition, determinants, Measurement, methods of increasing industrial morale. Groups and group dynamics.

Unit IV

Issues in Human Resources Management : Promotion, Demotion, Transfer, Separation, Absenteeism and Turnover.

Unit V

Rewards and Incentives : Meaning, features, types of reward. Wage Incentives, objectives, merits of incentives, incentive plans for Blue-collar workers. Incentive plans for White-collar workmen. Incentive for management employees. Guidelines for effective incentive plans.
