About National Institute of Technology - NIT Goa

National Institute of Technology, Goa (NIT Goa) is a Premier Technical Institute which came into being in the year 2010 by an act of parliament, NIT act 2007. NIT Goa is counted amongst those Institutes which are of National Importance. It is a government run University established by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. The Institute also enjoys the status of a Deemed University. The Institute started its academics with three engineering departments (1) Computer Science and Engineering (2) Electronics and Communication Engineering and (3) Electrical and Electronics Engineering at undergraduate level. It is an Autonomous Institute functioning from its independent campus at Farmagudi, Ponda approximately 29 km southeast of Panaji, the capital of Goa. The campus is self sustained and is well equipped with requisite amenities. NIT Goa attracts students from all over the country and abroad. The Institute admits students into the B. Tech degree program on the basis of ranks obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination JEE (Main) and the scheme of Direct Admission to Students Abroad (DASA) with an intake of 30 students in each branch.

Location

NIT Goa Campus is located at Farmagudi, Ponda, Goa. Farmagudi is located on a plateau 3 kms. from Ponda City on the way towards Panaji. Ponda city lies about 28 km south-east of Panaji and 17 kms. north-east of Margao.

Transportation

Ponda is well connected by road to Panaji (Capital of Goa) and main railway junction of Margao.

Air - Goa’s sole airport is the Dabolim Airport located in Vasco. It caters to domestic and international airlines that stop en route to other Indian destinations. It is at a distance of around 30 Kms. (45 Minute ride) from the institute.

Rail - Goa has two rail lines-one run by the South Western Railway and the other by the Konkan Railway. Closest major railway station is ‘Madgaon Railway Station’ which is around 20 Kms. (30 Minute ride) from the institute.

Facilities

Hostels - The Institute campus houses three hostels for boys and one for girls. These are well equipped for comfortable lodging and boarding of the students. Other facilities include wifi, banking, medical check-up, canteen and recreational facilities in the form of indoor games.

Library - The Library has a collection of about 6598 books. It subscribes to the databases of e-journals which are available in campus on intranet. The Library follows the ‘recommendation method’ to procure the documents and to meet the core knowledge need of academicians.

Internet – The institute has an extensive fiber optic network over the entire campus. The Internet connectivity to the campus is through a 1 Gbps Leased Line connection from BSNL (NKN) and another leased line from the other private ISP has been procured.

Computer Laboratory - The Institute has two well-equipped computing laboratories. These manage all the computational and network services. There is LAN Connectivity in each lab and Wi-fi Connectivity in all classrooms, Faculty block and hostels.

Classrooms - The Institute has modern classrooms, lecture halls and conference hall. Each one of them is well equipped with modern facilities such as Multimedia Projector, LAN and  WiFi connectivity, etc.

Sports – Sports facilities include a badminton court, grounds equipped for cricket, football, volleyball and basketball. The institute also hosts its annual sports event INVICTUS, in which all the branches of the institute actively participate. Recreational

Extracurricular Activities - To enhance the students’ confidence and creative skills, the institute encourages a variety of activities. One such event was the first Annual Technical festival – TECHNIVAL held in November 2014 which was attended by students from various parts of South India. Technical clubs such as Coding club, Robotics Club, Quizzing club, Toastmasters club etc. take part in various national level competitions and regularly hold in-house events. The institute also has its SPIE and IEEE student chapters registered with the respective organisations. A number of technical events like seminars and workshops are also conducted from time to time.

T and P Cell - Training and Placement Cell of National Institute of Technology, Goa (NIT Goa). The training and placement cell is endowed with the responsibility to cater to the needs of training and placement of its elite students. It helps the institute in inviting companies for campus recruitment, organising pre-placement talks, interviews and corporate interaction. This interface serves as a guide for the companies to make them familiar with the facts and process, pertaining to recruitment.

Achievements

• Four Students were selected for Internship at CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research) Geneva, Switzerland
• Two students received the invitation from the Rastrapathi Bhavan, New Delhi to participate in National Innovation Clubs held on 10^th March, 2015
• One student is the member of the winning team for Semicolons 2015- An International Hackathon
• Two students secured Bronze medal in the webism worldquant contest standing 85th & 93rd in the country
