Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi is one amongst the five campuses of the University established under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. It was established in 2003 with approximately 40 acres of land area. It is a multi-disciplinary research and teaching university. It is also known as Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University, Kochi Campus or Amrita University, Kochi. The university is managed by the Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Amma, one of the foremost humanitarian leaders in the world today. The campus though dominated by the health science schools, is not entirely restricted to medical sciences and has a School of Arts and Sciences and School of Business as well.
Constituent Schools of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi
1. Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) – It is has total of 3, 330, 000 sq. ft. of built-up area spread over 125 acres of land supports a daily patient volume of about 3000 outpatients with 95 percent inpatient occupancy. The hospital has received the ISO 9001-2008 accreditation. It is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its laboratories and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for the hospital overall.
2. School of Medicine – It was established in September 2002. The School offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs like B.Sc., M.Sc., MD/MS/PG Diploma, DM/MCh. etc. The School of Medicine building houses laboratories, lecture halls and a well-furnished central library complete with an outstanding collection of the latest editions of international and Indian medical books and journals. It also provides for electronic access to many scientific and medical databases in India and abroad.
3. School of Dentistry - The School of Dentistry is housed in a self-contained four-storey building, having a built-up area of 154,000 sq. ft. It is one of the biggest dental colleges in Asia. The School attracts a diverse patient population and students have the opportunity to acquire a full range of clinical experiences, both within the dental school and at the community level, including treatment of emergency cases, medically compromised cases, and physically and mentally challenged patients. By serving this varied segment of the population, students come to understand the prevalence of certain diseases and oral health problems, comprehend the patterns of disease, and learn from the outcomes of selected therapies.
4. School of Nursing - The School of Nursing provides nursing education, research and development of leadership skills and human values. It is situated within the Health Science campus in an exclusive building. The College of Nursing is recognized by the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council and Indian Nursing Council.
5. School of Pharmacy – It was established in 1997 for training and research in Pharmaceutical Sciences. It is located at the heart of Kochi making its location ideally suited for providing adequate infrastructure for training and research. The Amrita School of Pharmacy is recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and other statutory bodies and agencies. The students are encouraged and motivated to take part in the charitable outreach work of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS).
6. School of Allied Health Sciences – The school provides training in diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health care services in virtually all medical specialties, as delegated by a physician. The program is entirely hospital based and as such calls for hard and strenuous work, thus only those who are willing to dedicate themselves for patient care should opt for this program.
7. Centre for Nanosciences - The Amrita Center for Nanosciences (ACNS) is an independent Centre providing research and academic facilities. It is involved in cutting-edge research and is engaged in several funded projects that aim to succour pressing humanitarian issues. The Centre is engaged in pioneering work in the development of natural tissues and organs through tissue engineering using biodegradable scaffolds, within which cells are made to attach and proliferate in a controlled fashion. The Centre is also conducting research in cancer nanotechnology for the purposes of early detection and therapy of cancer, the development of biocompatible devices using nanomaterials and the development of biomedical nanosensors. The Centre was established in May 2006 as one of the seven Nanotechnology Centres funded by the Government of India under the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology initiative and is the only one in the biomedical area.
8. The School of Arts and Sciences – It is located at the sprawling and serene Brahmasthanam Temple Complex at Edappally, Kochi by the NH-17. School offers Ph.D., M.Phil., Post Graduate (P.G.), Integrated U.G. - P.G. and Under Graduate (U.G.) programme under various departments. The campus has an excellent landscape abundant with trees and gardens.
9. The School of Business – It is one among the three campuses of Amrita School of Business established in 2009. ASB, Kochi was rated as the 7th best B-School in South India by The Week in 2011. ASB offers postgraduate and Ph. D. programs in management offering specializations in the area of Finance, HR, Marketing, Operations and Information Systems.
