National Institute of Technology, Manipur (NIT, Manipur) is an autonomous Institute of National importance. It specialises in technical education through engineering courses. It is one of the ten newly set up NIT's by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The Institute was first established under the Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989 in 2010 and bestowed with the status of deemed university by Ministry of Human Resource and Devepolment. Later, NIT Manipur was declared as a full-fledged NIT along with nine other new NITs, through an Act of Parliament and notified under Government of India Gazette notification No. 28 of 2012 dated 7th June 2012 and declared as an Institute of National Importance. It is a centrally funded institution setup to impart quality technical education to various levels of higher learning. It has been established to cater to the needs of the thousands of students from the North East and outside in the field of technical education. National Institute of Technology Agartala, is its mentor institute and it started its first session on 1st August, 2010. As of 2015, it is functioning in its temporary Campus at Takyelpat, Imphal. The institute has acquired 341.5 acres of land in lush green area of Langol which would be its permanent campus.

The Institute has two campuses – one is permanent and other is temporary. The permanent campus is located at Langol Lamphel and temporary campus at Takyel. Both the campuses are around 4-6 km from airport and within 3 km from bus stand. The Imphal City is also only 4-5 km from airport. Local Taxis and Autos are available at Airport and Bus stands.
Transportation
i) By Air - Imphal has the second largest airport in the north east region. Imphal is connected to Kolkata, New Delhi, Guwahati, Aizawl, Dimapur and Silchar.
ii) By Bus to Imphal
iii) By Train - There is no direct train service to Imphal. But travellers can travel up to Guwahati (478 km) or Dimapur (210 km) (nearest rail head from Imphal) and then rest by bus or by air.

Facilities at NIT Manipur
Hostels - The institute provides separate hostel facilities for boys' and girls'. There are two boys' hostel and one girl's hostel providing basic amenities.
Library - The central library has about 10,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs. It also subscribes to various E-Journals and e-books.
Banking and Post Office Facilities - The state bank of India has a branch in the campus along with ATM facility. Punjab National Bank has also opened another ATM counter in the premises of the Institute.
Medical Facilities - A well-equipped medical unit with adequate medical officer including supporting staff is available in the campus for rendering medical care to students, staff and other inmate in the campus. In case of emergency, arrangements are made for shifting the patient to the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), Imphal and JNIMS, Imphal, which are not for away from the campus.
Reservations - 50% seats are reserved for the students from Manipur and the rest 50% seats are reserved for the students from the other states of India.
Placement Cell - The cell arranges for pre-placement talks, interviews, group discussions etc. are all handled by the staff at the office. The placement policies and other related activities are handled by Training and Placement officer in consultation with the student representatives. The process of coordinating with companies for recruitment is handled by the Placement Cell. The companies are encouraged to contact Placement Cell for initial discussions for confirming schedules and official communication.
