Part I:

Semester - I

Note:- Each student shall have to opt for the following four Compulsory Courses in Semester-I of M.A. Part I:

Part I

Semester - II

Note:- Each student shall have to opt for four courses in Semester-II of MA Part I. These shall consist of three compulsory papers and one interdisciplinary paper. The inter-disciplinary paper shall have to be chosen from the list provided.

Tibetan Language and Tibetan Buddhism

Buddhist Ethics

Socially Engaged Buddhism

 

Interdisciplinary Courses

Note:- Each student of Semester-II of MA Part I shall have to choose any one of the following interdisciplinary courses:

Introduction to Pali Literature Or

Comparative Philology of Prakrit Languages Or

History of India up to the time of the Buddha Or

Origin and Development of Buddhist Sects in India and their Philosophy Or

Devotion in Chinese Buddhism Or

Introduction on Buddhism and Buddhist Art in Tibet

 

Part II

Semester - III

Compulsory Courses

Note:- Each student shall have to opt for any ONE of the following six groups known as A, B, C, D, E, and F; each consisting of Four papers. The chosen group shall be treated as the field of specialization of the student.

  • Post-Canonical Pali Literature

Group B: Sanskrit Based Buddhism

  • Vaibha–ika and Sautrantika Literature
  • Vajrayana and Tantric Buddhist Literature
  • Vijnanavada (Yogacara) Buddhist Literature
  • Madhyamika Buddhist Literature

Group C: History of Buddhism

  • History of Indian Buddhism from the Mauryas till Har–a
  • Early Historic Cities and Settlements: A Literary & Archaeological Study
  • Buddhist Art and Architecture
  • Advent and Spread of Southern Buddhism

Group D: Philosophy of Buddhism

  • Theravada Buddhist Philosophy
  • Later Mahayana and Vajrayana Philosophy
  • Vasubandhu and Yogacara Idealism
  • Nagarjuna and the Madhyamika Philosophy

Group E: Chinese Buddhism

  • Chinese Buddhist Literature
  • History of Buddhism in China (220 CE- 907 CE)
  • History of Buddhism in China (907 CE onwards)

Group F: Tibetan Buddhism

  • Tibetan Buddhist Literature-I

Part II

Semester - IV

Note:- Each student shall have to opt for a total of four papers in Semester-II of MA Part I. These four papers shall consist of three compulsory courses forming part of either of the six groups (A, B, C, D, E, F) and one interdisciplinary course to be chosen out of a list provided.

1. Compulsory Courses

Note:- Each student shall have to opt for any one of the following six groups known as A, B, C, D, E, and F; each consisting of three papers. The chosen group will be treated as the field of specialization of the student. The group chosen in Semester IV shall have to be the same as in Semester III and no change shall be allowed.

Group C: History of Buddhism

  • Ancient Indian Epigraphy
  • History of the Decline of Indian Buddhism
  • Advent and Spread of Northern Buddhism

Group D: Philosophy of Buddhism

  • Dignaga: Buddhist Logic & Epistemology
  • Buddhist Philosophy of Language & Dialectics
  • Sanskrit-based Abhidharma Philosophy

Group E: Chinese Buddhism

  • The Influence of Buddhism on Chinese Culture
  • Buddhist Sects in China
  • Buddhist Art & Literature in China

Group F: Tibetan Buddhism

  • Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy & Logic
  • Esoteric Buddhism in Tibet
  • Advent and Spread of Himalayan Buddhism

 

2. Interdisciplinary Courses

Note:- Each student of Semester-IV of MA Part II shall have to choose any one of the following interdisciplinary courses:

Origin and Development of Mahayana Buddhist Philosophy or

Royal Patronage of Buddhism in China or
