Course Duration: Two Year (Semester System)

Course Eligibility :  There shall be an entrance test for admission to M.Phil. in Buddhist Studies. Those who have passed M.A. with 55% marks in Buddhist Studies, Pali, Sanskrit, Ancient Indian History and Culture and Archaeology, Chinese and Tibetan or at 60% marks in any other relevant subjects shall be eligible to apply for the Entrance Test.

Admission Criteria: Merit in qualifying examination, subject to eligibility criteria.

Pali Language with special reference to its Origin, Home and Basic Characteristics.

Basics of Pali Grammer.

Survey of Pali Grammar.

Survey of Pali Post-Canonical Literature.

 

Part-2 

Origin and Development of Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit.

A Linguistic Study of Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit.

Survey of the Sutra Literature.

Survey of Sastra Literature, Jatakas and Avadans.

Part-3

Origin of Buddhism, Life of the Buddha. Date of the Mahaparinibbana various Socioeconomic            aspects of early Buddhism including doctrine of Ahimsa, Buddhism views on women and caste         system.

Development of the Sagha, Growth of the Vinaya rules, various Buddhism Councils.

Critical evaluation of the contribution of various personalities in the development and spread of       Buddhism in India.

Decline of Buddhism in India, Revival of Buddhism in Modern India and Neo-Buddhism.
