Kakatiya University was established on August 19, 1976. It's establishment fulfilled a long cherished aspiration of the people of Telangana. The University began with only four Departments, viz. Telugu, English, Chemistry and Mathematics in 1968, Departments of Physics, Botany, Zoology, Commerce and Public Administration were added later. The Department of Economics was started in 1974. B. Pharmacy course which was started by OU in 1974 was shifted to KU in 1975. The Post-Graduate Centre was accorded autonomy in administrative and academic affairs by OU on April 30, 1976. Eventually, it was upgraded into Kakatiya University on August 19,1976. The University has been named after the great Kakatiya Dynasty which ruled this region with Warangal as capital during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries which ensured political stability, economic prosperity, linguistic and cultural unity. The University also celebrated in a grand way its Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 2001. With the expansion of jurisdictional area of the University in 1988, it has now in its fold 321 colleges (171 old govt. aided, private unaided degree colleges, 66 new colleges in 2005, 48 B.Ed. colleges, 14 pharmacy colleges, 3 law colleges, 3 engineering colleges, including Kothagudem Engineering College, 11 university PG colleges, 29 colleges offering MBA, and 32 colleges offering MCA), located in the Northern Telangana districts of Karimnapr, Khammam, Adilabad and Warangal offering a number of programmes at the Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Research levels in Professional as well as Non-Professional courses.
The University has a network of eleven constituent colleges with 24 Departments. During 2004-2005, the total enrolment of students for under-graduate programmes was around 90,000, while it was 6,500 for the post-graduate courses. About 175 research scholars are registered for Ph.D. programmes in different faculties. At present the University has its Post-graduate Colleges at Nirmal, Karimnagar, Godavarikhani, Subedari (Hanamkonda), Khammam and Kothagudem in addtion to the main campus. Kothagudem School of Mines has been elevated to the status of University Engineering College, Kothagudem. The Kakatiya University is now offering programmes in Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, M.C.A., M.B.A. Education. Science. Arts, Commerce. Oriental Courses in University, constituent and affiliated Colleges in addition to a large number of around 60 programmes under distance mode through SDLCE. For the first time in Andhra Pradesh, PG courses in Science for in-service teachers and government employees, M.L.I.Sc and MCJ, Diploma in Mimicry, Certificate Course in Communication Skills in English, M.Sc. (Environmental Science) and M.Sc.(Psychology) have been introduced recently.

Facilities
University Library - It has 1,25,685 No. of books as of 31.3.07. The University Library is a member of INFLIBNET. Internet connectivity has been taken through V-SAT. There are 20 departments on the campus having an annual book grant of Rs.20,000/- each and Rs.1.00 lakh to the library for the purchase of reference books. An amount of Rs.2,00,000/- sanction by ITDA, Eturnagaram for the purchase of books exclusively for ST students in the year 2004.
University Computer Centre - The University has provided the Campus Networking connecting all the departments/sections/offices of the University spread over a 2.5 km radius. The University, under the Campus Networking Scheme, has provided Internet Connectivity of 4 mbps bandwidth to all the departments and offices located both on the Campus I & II. Apart from this, the University has access to UGC-INFONET programme to download about 4000 reputed research e-journals to all the departments of the University.
Central Instrumentation Centre - CIC and a Central Workshop cater to the needs of all the Science Departments of the University. The centre has purchased a FTIR Spectrophotometer Model BX-1 system and UV-VIS spectrophotometer etc. and installed the same with the financial assistance from UGC IX Plan grants for Rs. 10.00 lakhs and Rs. 4.5 lakhs respectively. They are being used by several research scholars and teaching staff of various faculties. The centre has also purchased DSC & TGA from the special assistance of UGC for Rs. 22.00 lakhs. The Central Instrumentation Centre provides the following research facilities: Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectrophotometer, UV-Vis-Nir Spectrophotometer etc. Research Scholars from other Universities / Institutions in Andhra Pradesh like Osmania University, Sri Krishna Devaraya University etc. have also utilised these facilities
University Hostels - The University maintains 8 hostels in Warangal town with a total intake of 800 students. However more than 1500 students are being accommodated in these hostels. Out of the 8 hostels, 6 are on the University Campus, while one hostel for Law College is located at the University Arts & Science College, Subedari. One hostel for University PG College, Subedari is temporarily housed in a rented building. There is acute shortage of accommodation for girls as they are now being temporarily accommodated in University Staff Quarters.
National Service Scheme - During 2002-2003 Community Service rendered by the NSS volunteers has covered several aspects like adoption of villages for development work, carrying out the medico-social surveys, setting up of medical centres, programmes of mass immunization, sanitation drives, adult education programmes, blood donation, helping patients in hospitals, helping inmates of orphanages and the physically handicapped etc.
SC/ST Cell - It undertakes the activities to develop awareness among the SC/ST students especially those coming from rural areas regarding various activities related to their. The staff of the Cell solves the problems related to admissions in affiliated colleges and in the university, utilization and timely disbursement of scholarships, accommodation in hostels, the implementation of rule of reservation in appointments as well as in allotment of quarters to SC/ST employees. The cell is also helping the SC/ST Research Scholars in getting the contingency grant sanctioned @ Rs. 5,000/- and Rs. 3,000/- to those who have submitted Ph.D. thesis and M.Phil. dissertation respectively. It also has arranged wide publicity of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Fellowship among the SC/ST students. As a result, 51 M.Phil. students have been selected for the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Fellowship in various courses.
21st Century Gurukulam - The 21st Century Gurukulam provides enhanced opportunities to empower rural gifted youth of Andhra Pradesh to achieve their full potential. A one-year pre MSIT programme is offered under this Gurukulam on completion of which the students will become eligible to appear for MSIT entrance test leading to MTech/MS degree in IT. It is a self sustaining, self-governing and self-supporting community modeled after the ancient Gurukulam and the modern day Kibbutz. Its primary purpose is to provide remedial education and IT training leading to postgraduate degree in IT for the rural gifted youth. A secondary goal is to enable them to succeed in national entrance examinations including IIM and UPSC examinations.
Centre For Women's Studies - The Centre for Women studies has conducted two National Seminars, 3 workshops, four research projects, Seven awareness programmes, Two field surveys, Three Open forums and two medical health camps. The Centre has conducted 16 programmes, four work-shops and two field studies.
Placement Cell - There is a separate cell established in the University to guide the students for employment opportunities. It also invites organizations for conducting campus selections circulating the profile of students on various fields.
Counselling Bureau - It is involved in disseminating the information regarding various academic programs on the campus and from other colleges/universities and guiding the students in selecting the right path etc.
Career Guidance Bureau - It's objective is to show various career and competitive opportunities open to the students and imparts interview, debating, group discussion and presentation skills to the students etc.
Students Welfare Bureau - It is involved in improving the communication skills, GK, IQ, EQ of the students, assisting the students in drafting, preparation of CVs, etc.,
Yoga Centre - It has been conducting certificate courses (3 months duration) since December, 2000 along with various other activities pertaining to Yoga teaching, training and propagation. A New Yoga Therapy wing at the Yoga Centre possesses several instruments and facilities for the therapeutic services which are available for the use of the staff and the students of our university.
Health Centre - The University Health Centre provides infrastructural facilities and with a permanent Medical Officer at University Campus and another unit at University Arts & Science College, Subedari. The unit located at University Arts & Science College, Subedari caters to the needs of the students and the staff of University PG College and University College of Law, Subedari. The Health Centre-I & II are providing facilities to the University Students, Research Scholars, Teaching Staff, Non-Gazetted Officers’, Class-IV employees, Daily-wage employees and their families according to the standards fixed by the Medical and Health Department of Andhra Pradesh. There are four doctors to look after them along with other staff
Consultancy Services - To provide Industry-Academy Interaction, The faculties of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering & Technology and Science take-up consultation work on a massive scale, which is encouraged by UGC/ AICTE . It is an effective means of generating finances for the development and strengthening of academic activities of the University.
Free legal aid to the poor - The District Legal Aid Committee constituted with the District & Sessions Judge as its Chairman has been very active in providing free legal aid to the poor, whose income is less than Rs.500/ - and property not more than worth Rs.l0,000/-. The University College of Law has taken up this programme .
Bank And Postal Services - State Bank of Hyderabad has its branch on the campus and also an ATM near SDLCE building. Extension counters in the administrative building and in the premises of Directorate of Admissions and SDLCE facilitate the staff and the students to operate the regular transactions facilitates the admission seeking students to pay fee on the spot. There is also a Sub-Post Office on the campus near the Hostels for the use and convenience of the students and the staff.
Gymnasium & Play Fields - The University has well maintained play fields for Cricket, Hockey, Foot ball, Volley ball, Basket ball, Kho-kho, Kabaddi, Hand ball, Ball badminton etc. It also has 400 meters track and fields. Further, an Indoor Games Complex has also been developed with wooden flooring and with four badminton courts, table tennis court etc. The University Gymnasium has been developed suitably to facilitate for conducting State or National level Gymnastic competitions. It has the equipment like horizontal bar, parallel bar, roman rings, crash landing mats, other mats for floor exercises, balancing beams etc. Our multi-gym has 16 stations and other accessories like static cycles, walker, weight lifting material, power lifting material etc.
Kakatiya Adhyayana Kendram - The Kakatiya Adhyayana Kendram (Pre-Examination Centre) imparts coaching for all Competitive Examinations conducted by APPSC, UPSC, EAMCET, Bank PO’s, etc to the economically backward classes. The Social Welfare, Tribal Welfare and Backward Classes Welfare Departments and Government of Andhra Pradesh have been extending financial support to the centre.
Seminar Halls - The University has various Seminar Halls and Auditoriums with associated the facilities and accommodation
Sports Board - It has been sending various teams to participate in national level competitions and has achieved various laurels.
