Women's Equality Day

Email

Held on : 26th August

Men and Women are both Equal and both play a vital role in the creation and development of their families in a particular and the society in general. Though it is not a Reality. Women have had to struggle for Legal Equality. And it has been one of the major concerns of the women’s movement all over the world. In earlier times, women were not allowed to Vote. Only men could Vote. However with Women's Rights Movements, catching up in various parts of the world, Woman's Right to Vote gained momentum. As a result, Women's Suffrage (Women's Right to Vote)  has been granted at various times in various countries throughout the world. New Zealand is considered to be the First Country in the World, to give this Right in 1893.

The struggle for women's rights is based on the will of strong women, to take the lead and pave the way toward equal voting rights for all American citizens. In 1848, a group of determined women came together in Seneca Falls, New York, to proclaim that "all men and women are created equal," and demand suffrage. Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26, 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. Bella was an American lawyer, Congresswoman, social activist and a leader of the Women's Movement. In 1971 Abzug joined other leading feminists such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan to found the National Women's Political Caucus. The resolution that she passed designated August 26 of each year as Women's Equality Day. Her leadership was Quintessential in establishing Women's Equality Day. The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.

Workplaces, libraries, organizations, and public facilities now participate with Women’s Equality Day programs, displays, video showings, or other activities. Activities on this day also include parades, rallies, specials audio-video broadcasts etc.
