About Shoolini University - SU

Shoolini University (SU) is a State University as per the notification of the Government of Himachal Pradesh No. .EDN –A-Gha(8) -10/2006 dated 15th October, 2009. The Degrees awarded by Shoolini University are recognized by UGC (Letter No. F No. 8-1/2010 (CPP-1/PU) of UGC dated 4th Feb 2010 ). Shoolini University is a Bonafide University established by a State Act, it does not require AICTE approval.

Mr Ramesh Mehan, a leading NRI entrepreneur from USA, with roots in Himachal Pradesh, conceived the idea of promoting biotechnology education, and of integrating it with management sciences during a visit to India in December, 2003. He joined hands with renowned academician Prof P K Khosla, former Vice Chancellor at HPAU, Palampur and Mr Satish Anand, a local businessman with vast experience in local infrastructure development, for this venture. With the vision of building a world-class university that combines academic & teaching pursuits with a research driven model, the Foundation put forward a proposal for setting up of a University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences to HP Government in 2005. The proposal was accepted by the government and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences was established under the auspices of the Foundation for Life Sciences and Business Management. The University is named after the local deity – goddess Shoolini. The foundation envisages significant investments to develop well equipped state of the art labs as well as to recruit and retain the best faculty through a challenging work environment, competitive emoluments, and access to global information sources. The University has started a course in B.Tech. Mechanical whose minimum eligibility criteria is 50% Marks in 10+2 with PCM stream only. The University is in the in the process of starting Ph.D., M.Phil., M.Tech., M.Pharma., M.Sc. (Hons) and B.Tech. programmes in basic, applied, engineering, management, pharmaceutical and computer sciences from academic session 2009-2010. Shoolini University has 1.5 lac sq ft of built campus that has been spread over 100 bighas (20 acres).

Location
- Placed between two bustling cities of Chandigarh and Shimla, Shoolini University lies at the foothills of the Himalayas. The Campus lies at Bajhol, which is 14 km from Solan, 54 km from Chandigarh and 18 km from Dharampur.

Admission Eligibility

1)  Biotechnology : Ph.D. - Biochemistry / Molecular Biology / Food Technology / Fermentation Technology / Agricultural Biotechnology and any other field of Life Sciences / Physical Sciences / Engineering and Technology / Pharmacy / Medical Sciences with at least 55% marks with NET qualified.

2)  Biotechnology : MSc-Biotechnology / Microbiology with 50% marks/U.G.passed with Agricultural, Biological, Fishery, Pharmaceutical, Physical or Veterinary Sciences, MBBS, Engineering / Technology, Home Science with minimum 55% marks.

3)  M.Pharma : B.Pharma with minimum 60% marks.

4)  School of Pharmacy : Phd-M. Pharma with minimum 55% marks. GATE qualified candidates are preferred.

Refund of Fee - Admission fee, annual charges and tuition fee once paid are not refundable. However, in the event of a student/ candidate withdrawing before the starting of the course, the wait listed candidates would be given admission against the vacant seat. The entire fee collected from the student, after a deduction of the processing fee of not more than Rs. 1000/-only shall be refunded and returned by the Institution to the student/ candidate before the start of the programme. Should a student leaves after joining the course and if seat consequently falling vacant has been filled by another candidate by the last date of admission, the Institution would return the fee collected with proportionate deductions of monthly fee and proportionate Hostel rent, where applicable. Facilities

Doctoral Programme
- Ph.D Courses include Biotechnology/ Microbiology/ Pharmaceutical Sciences/ Business Administration/ Environment Science/ Botany/ Zoology. Admission is through an entrance test (JRF/NET/SAT/M.Phil. qualified candidates are exempted from entrance test), followed by personal interview before the research advisory committee of the University. Besides the fellowship amount, a JRF qualified candidate shall be given special financial assistantship limited to maximum of Rs. 16,000/ per month along with a tuition fee waiver. NET qualified candidates may also be considered for limited financial assistance on merit.

MBA in Business Processes & Operations - Shoolini University in Partnership with GENPACT is providing this MBA programme. It is designed to provide the leading edge for a career in Business Process Management with best practices in academics from Shoolini University and inputs from GENPACT - the industry and thought leader in Business Process Management. Graduate in any stream with minimum 50% pass marks can apply. Candidates will be required to take admission test & interview. Experience in BPO, KPO will be given preference in admission. Shoolini University’s fees are fixed by the H.P. Govt. The fees of this programme is the same as a regular MBA programme of Rs. 110,000 p.a. ( & 1 time refundable security deposit of Rs. 10,000). Hostels - Hostel facility is available for 220 girls at the campus. Rooms with balcony are available on triple sharing basis. Each student gets one bed, mattress, study (with internet connection), wardrobe. The Hostel also has common facilities of a living room, TV room, activity area and TT Table. Mess and other sit outs are also attached to the Hostel. Another 80-bed facility is available for girls in the city, and a 100-bed facility is available for boys. Provision of Hostel accommodation to the admitted students is subject to availability of rooms and allotment will be made on first come serve basis. In case of non-availability of rooms, candidates need to make their own alternate arrangements. However, the University assists the students in finding accommodation in decent paying guest houses. Hostel accommodation is allotted only on the production of ID card and Hostel fee receipt. A four-room Guest House is available for parents visiting their wards during the stay at the hostel on subsidised rates. An on-campus Health Centre headed by a senior physician is available for routine check ups. Ambulance facility is available 24x7 on campus for emergencies. Special hygiene and health education programs is provided to the boarders as well. Apart from basic facilities, a well-developed curricula for Hostel activities is developed in consultation with the students at the starting of the session. The curricula includes painting, music, dramatics, celebrating festivals and running social service campaigns.

Library - The Central Library of the University has over 10,000 books. It makes available 50 Indian and International Journals; an Online Library with 12 nodes; and a reference room with broadband connectivity & workstations.

Educational Loan - Shoolini University has tied up Punjab National Bank to make easy education loan available to prospective students. The student can cover both tuition fee and Hostel expenses with the loan.

Transportation Charges - Annual Transportation charges of Rs. 6500/- shall be paid by the students for availing the University bus services at the time of admission. Transport charges have to be paid in one instalment for the whole academic year. No refund shall be permitted under any circumstances, even if the student opts not to avail the facility during the middle of the academic year.

IT Centre
- The University IT Centre encompasses one Central Laboratory with 100 computers (thin clients) for general surfing, two labs for faculty with 25 computers each, and two Laboratories for engineering and technology students with 60 computers each. The Laboratories are supported with two IBM servers with Xenon processor, windows 2008 server etc.

Wi-Fi Campus - Shoolini University has a Wi-Fi Campus along with a 2 mbps leased-line, radio-based 24x7 internet connectivity. The Computer Laboratories offer 'Thin Client Technology' with IBM servers that support both Linux & Windows based environment. There are central as well as departmental IT facilities with over 120 nodes. The University also provides laptop facilities for all MBA students.

Laboratories - There are 20 Research & Teaching Laboratories for life sciences and technology.

Centre of Excellence in Innovation - Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences is going to incorporate a Centre of Excellence in Innovation. The University has on its panel a highly reputed group of senior researchers who have developed ideas in basic research affecting the social well being of people. The Centre of Excellence in Innovation shall help in translating basic research into commercially relevant technology through further research and effective management of intellectual property arising due to research.

Health Care and Meditation - Medical facility has been provided by way of residential visit of a doctor in the Hostels and with the on-campus dispensary. A Meditation Centre, providing an environment of serenity and mental relaxation forms an important part of the Institute's infrastructure.

Museum & Herbarium - The university houses a Museum & Herbarium that has more than 500 varieties of herbs and samples.

Placement - The University has a pro-active and devoted Placement Cell that has partnered with Shine.com and Cocubes for Placement of students with the best opportunities available. A Placement fair is held every year to facilitate job Placements for final year students. Previous employers include HT Media Limited, Fullerton India, Meridian Laboratories, Frankfinn India, Symbiosis Life Sciences Limited, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company Limited etc.

Sports- The campus already includes an indoor sports room and a gymnasium. A tennis court, basket ball court, and a large play ground are under development. There is also a student-run and student-managed Mountaineering & Adventure Sports Club.

Abroad Tours - Each year the University takes interested students on an educative and entertaining tour in India or abroad.

Terraced Herbal Garden - Shoolini University is a green Campus, aptly signified by a Terraced Herbal Garden. This garden has a huge variety of Himalayan herbs. There is also a vermi-composting facility along with a set up for water harvesting.

Entertainment - Shoolini University offers various options for entertainment within campus. There is a special Audio Video Room and a Live Wire Room (with live internet nodes specially designed for Stock Market Live training sessions). There are cafés around the place for get-together's as well.

Achievements

  • Shoolini University has the distinction of being the 'First Biotech University of India'.
  • It has AICTE approval for MBA, 2 year full time programme and B.Pharma., 4 year full time programme. As per law, Universities do not require AICTE approval. Only Institutions which are affiliated to Universities require approval. As Shoolini University is a Bonafide University established by a State Act, it does not require AICTE approval yet it has got approval for the above mentioned courses.
  • SU has an MOU with Seoul National University (South Korea), which is the 50th best University globally.
  • Shoolini University has been recognized as a Scientific and Research Organisation by DISR, Ministry of Science Technology.
  • Like any UGC recognized Degrees of any University in India, students passing out from Shoolini University are eligible to sit in examinations like GATE, CAT, UPSC, GMAT, GRE, JRF etc. For example: Eligibility for CAT is a Bachelor Degree with at least 50% marks from a University established by Central or State Act. As Shoolini University is a University established by the State Government, students are eligible for CAT. Eligibility to sit in the UPSC examination is a Degree from a recognized University or equivalent. Shoolini University students are eligible to sit in UPSC.
  • The University also has collaborations and MOU's with Ministry of Micro Small Medium Enterprises, Government of India, Chnungbuk National University and Lund University.
  • Shoolini University is developing an alliance with New Hampshire University of USA for ‘Credit Transfer’ and student/faculty exchange programmes in biotechnology related courses. The proposal has been accepted in principle by Dr Subhash Minocha, Professor of Plant Biology and Genetics, College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, New Hampshire University. Prof. Minocha had visited Shoolini University campus during November 2009 along with a team of researchers who were highly impressed by the infrastructure, Laboratory and Library facilities at the Shoolini.
