Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur Invites Applications for Admission into Ph.D in Engineering Programs

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission into following programme for 2013-14.

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Materials Science & Engineering

Eligibility Conditions

  • The applicant must have a master’s degree in Engineering with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum. Applicants with a bachelor’ degree in Engineering with a minimum of 75% marks/7.5 CPI, or master’s degree in Science or an allied area, satisfying each of the following criteria may also be considered:
    • A minimum of 65% marks/6.5 CPI in the master’s degree
    • First division in bachelor’s degree
    • JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE

  • For admission into Ph.D in Biological Sciences and Bio-engineering, applicants having master’s degree in Pharmacy/Medicine with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum, or bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy/Medicine with a minimum of 75% marks/7.5 CPI, may be considered. However, valid GATE/UGC/CSIR score is required for financial assistance, except for graduates from IITs with a minimum CGPA of 8.0. 

How to Apply

  • Applications must be filled online by visting the official website, except for departments of Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Material Science and Engineering. These three departments will accept both online and paper submission of applications.

  • After filling in the online application, one has to take a print out and send it to the department concerned, along with all the certificates, photograph, and a draft for application fee. The lists of attachments are provided on the application page (as well as in the paper application form for the three departments).

  • The application fee is Rs.400 for general and OBC candidates, and Rs.200 for SC/ST candidates and all PD candidates (including general and OBC). The fee must be paid through a demand draft payable to The Registrar, IIT Kanpur payable at Kanpur. Please keep the draft ready before starting to fill in the online application form. 

Selection Procedure

  • For Ph.D programs, some departments/programs may call a selected number of candidates for test and/or interview in May/June for admission in first semester and in November for admission in second semester.

  • Other departments/programs may process the applications only on the basis of earlier academic records and/or GATE/UGC/CSIR scores where the same is required and offer admissions directly. All students who are offered admission will be informed normally by the first week of June (for admission in first semester) or first week of December (for admission in second semester).

Important Dates

  • The last date of submitting application: 8th Apr, 2013 (Monday)
  • Last date to receive printed application form along with documents: 11th Apr, 2013 (Thursday)
