M.Phil. Horticulture or Master of Philosophy in Horticulture is a pre-Doctorate Agriculture Science and Technology course. Horticulture is the industry and science of plant cultivation including the process of preparing the soil for the planting of seeds, tubers, or cuttings. The work involves fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. Horticulturists work to improve crop yield, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses. Horticulture usually refers to gardening on a smaller scale, while agriculture refers to the large-scale cultivation of crops. The duration of the course is two years and its syllabus is divided into two semesters as well.

  • Aspiring students should have passed a master's degree in Horticulture with a minimum of second class securing at least 55% of the aggregate marks or in an examination recognized as equivalent.

  • They should have the ability to communicate, to provide practical and information in simple language, patience and ability to infuse enthusiasm for learning in students and work for long periods with intense concentration.

Those in the government sector are responsible for the maintenance of parks, public gardens, official lawns, etc.
  • Both public and private sectors offer employment to qualified and trained horticulturists with attractive remuneration. In the government sector, one can work as Horticulture Inspector, Fruit and Vegetable Inspector, Training Assistant in Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), District Horticulture Officer or District Agriculture Officer, Marketing Inspector, Farm Supervisor, Section Officer and Agriculture Inspector.
  • Option of a career as Lecturer and Assistant Professor, Associate Professor in Agriculture Universities and Colleges or Technical Assistant or Technical Officer in Agriculture Universities can also be accessed.
  • One can also work as an Agriculture Development Officer or can become Scientist. 
  • The self-employment option is available as Horticulture Consultant or Horticulture Therapist, Floral decorator or florist shop, Fruit or Vegetable or Flower grower, etc.
