M.S. Ayurveda or Master of Surgery in Ayurveda is a postgraduate Medical course. It deals with the diagnosis of various surgical disorders, surgical techniques, trauma and surgical emergency management etc. Surgery in Ayurveda is a system of traditional practices which utilize both the traditional and modern surgical techniques for surgery. The academic study of this ancient form of medicine is traditionally known as Ayurveda Dhanwantri or M.S. (Ayu) which is an abbreviated form of Master of Surgery in Ayurveda. To be precise it is known as Ayurveda Dhanwantri - Shalya Tantra – Samanya. The course is known as Mahir-e-Jarahat which is an Arabic Term for Master of Surgery in Ayurved. It is offered by Aligarh Muslim University (A.K. Tibbiya College). The Course is of 3 years duration divided into a number of semesters. The Course structure is the combination of both the integrated systems of modern medicine and traditional Ayurveda. A person who successfully completes the course becomes Shalya Chikitaka i.e. English equivalent of Surgeon.

Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) was created in March 1995 and re-named as Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in November, 2003 with a view to providing focused attention to development of Education & Research in Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems. Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) is the statutory regulatory body constituted under IMCC Act 1970 regulating the Ayurveda education at degree level as well as at PG level as well as the practice of Ayurvedic medicine in India. The syllabus and curriculum for each specialty is uniform throughout the country and is being conducted only in Ayurvedic Medical Colleges affiliated to universities and only after getting prior permission from Dept. of AYUSH, Union Govt. of India to start the course/undertake the admissions.

M.S. Ayurveda Eligibility

  • Candidates should have passed a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Degree, recognised by CCIM. One must have completed a 12-month rotating internship (4 1/2 years BAMS course) or 6 months rotating internship (five years BAMS course).
  • Those who have an MBBS degree, recognized by the Medical Council of India are also eligible for M.S. (Ayu) Course.
  • A Candidate should not be more than 35 years of age. Age Criteria may vary as per an institute’s regulation.

Mode of Admission

  • Candidates also need to clear an entrance test to get admission in the course. Selection of candidates shall be made strictly on basis of Final Merit Index calculated out of the total index of 100 marks based on Written Test and Marks obtained in concerned subject and Final Year Examination of Degree Course in the following manner:
  • Marks obtained in Written Test of 80 Marks plus Index of Marks obtained in the Final Year Examination of Degree Course (to be calculated out of 10 marks).
  • The Written Test of 80 Marks shall consist of 1 Common Written Paper comprising of Objective Type Questions covering all the subjects of Ayurved Acharya (BAMS) Course as regulated by CCIM
  • The minimum eligibility marks for admission in the case of general candidates shall be 50% of the total index of marks and in the case of candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes shall be 40%.
  • The sponsored candidates shall also be required to possess the percentage of marks as specified.
    Change of subject shall be permissible within a period of 2 Months from the date of admission subject to availability of vacancy and guide in the concerned department.

Regulations as per CCIM for M.S. Ayurveda

Period of Study and Attendance

  • The student will have to go undergo a study of 3 Years out of which the 1st year will be devoted to Preliminary Course and following Two Years for Speciality Course.
  • The students shall have to attend at least 75% of total Lectures, Practical’s and Clinical Tutorials or Classes to become eligible for appearing in the examination.
  • The students shall have to attend the hospital and other duties as may be assigned to them during the study.
  • The students shall have to do House job duties and Clinical Registrar’s duties in their respective departments during a preliminary and final course.
  • The students shall have to attend specials lectures, demonstrations, seminars, study tours and such other activities as arranged by the teaching departments.
  • The graduate teachers having 3 Years teaching experience shall be allowed to undertake Postgraduate training as a regular student.

Method of Training

  • Intensive training shall be provided in classical knowledge along with comparative and critical study in the respective specialty.
  • The emphasis shall be given to theoretical and intensive applied training and trot not in Dictation Lectures
  • The students shall have to acquire the knowledge about the methods and techniques of research in the respective fields making use of Information Technology.
  • In clinical subjects, the students shall undertake responsibility for the management and treatment of patients independently and deal with emergencies.
  • The students shall have to participate in the teaching and training programmes of undergraduate students or interns in the respective subjects.
  • In the First Year of the course, the students shall have to acquire knowledge in the applied aspects of the fundamentals of Ayurved.
  • In the clinical training, the student shall have to acquire the knowledge of independent work as a specialist.
  • In the specialties of Shalya, Shalakya and Stri Roga and Prasutitantra, the student shall have to undergo training of investigative procedures, techniques and surgical performance of procedures and management in the respective specialty.
  • The student shall have to undertake training in teaching technology and research methods while studies.

Dissertation

  • Before a student can undertake the work of dissertation, the title of the dissertation shall be registered with the university within a period of 6 Months from the date of admission and the synopsis not later than 6 months after passing the preliminary examination.
  • The application for registration of the title of title dissertation shall clearly mention the full title of the dissertation with a synopsis of the proposed scheme of work indicating the familiarity of the student with the proposed theme of work, the name of the department and the name and designation of the guide or supervisor and co-guide, if any.
  • For approving the title, a scrutiny committee shall be constituted by the University.
  • One copy of the synopsis of the dissertation shall be submitted to the Registrar, Central Council of Indian Medicine as soon as the title is approved.
  • The subject of every dissertation shall be practical oriented, devoid of unpromising specialties and helpful in the development of Ayurveda.
  • Once the title for a dissertation is approved by the Scrutiny Committee of the University, the student shall not be allowed to change the title or the proposed theme of work without permission of the University.
  • The registration of the student shall be cancelled if he/she fails to submit the title of dissertation and synopsis within the period specified
  • No student shall be allowed to submit the dissertation before the expiry of one calendar year after approval of the topic and before 6 months of the final year: Provided that the student shall continue his or her regular studies in the institution after submission of a dissertation
  • The subject of the dissertation shall have relation with the subject matter of the specialty. 
    The dissertation shall contain the methods and data of the research carried out by the student on the problem selected by him and completed under the guidance of the teacher approved by the University.
  • The dissertation shall consist critical survey of relevant literature, methodology, results of the research, discussion based on existing literature of the subject, summary conclusion, and references cited in the dissertation.
  • The dissertation shall consist of not more 200 typed pages.
  • The dissertation shall contain, in the end, a summary of not more than 1500 words and the conclusion not exceeding 1000 words.
  • The guide or supervisor shall be a person of a status of a Professor or Reader or Lecturer with Five years teaching experience in the subject.
  • A Professor or Reader or Lecturer can register only one student in one academic year
  • The dissertation shall be a literary presentation and suitable for publication either as such or in an abridged form.
  • Five copies of the bound dissertation along with a certificate from the supervisor or guide should reach the office of the Registrar of the University six months before the final examination.
  • The dissertation shall be assessed by 2 External and 1 Internal Examiners appointed by the University.
  • The dissertation shall be accepted only after the approval of examiners appointed under the sub-regulation and in case of disapproval by one external examiner; the dissertation shall be referred to the third examiner.
  • If the dissertation is not accepted, the same shall be returned to the student with the remarks of the examiners and the student can resubmit the dissertation after making necessary improvement in the light of examiners report to the University within a further period of 6 Months.
  • The student shall be permitted to appear in the final examination of postgraduate degree course only after the examiners appointed for the purpose have approved the dissertation.

Examination and Assessment
The postgraduate degree course shall have 2 Examinations in the following manner: -

(a) The preliminary examination shall be conducted at the end of one academic year after admission;
(b) The final examination shall be conducted on the completion of two academic years after passing the preliminary examination;
(c) The examination shall ordinarily be held in the month of June or July and November or December every year;
(d) For being declared successful in the examination, the student shall have to pass all the subjects separately in preliminary examination;
(e) The result of students shall be announced as Pass or Fail only;

(i) If a student fails in one subject only in a preliminary examination, he/she shall have to pass in that subject before he/she is allowed to appear in the final examination;
(ii) If a student fails in theory or practice in the final examination, he/she can appear in the subsequent examination without requiring to submit a fresh dissertation; and
(iii) The postgraduate degree shall be conferred after the dissertation is accepted and the student passes the final examination.

(e) The examination shall be aimed to test the clinical acumen, ability and working knowledge of the student in the practical aspect of the specialty and his/her fitness to work independently as a specialist.
(f) The clinical examination shall aim at a careful assessment of the competence of the student so that his/her familiarity with Ayurved and scientific literature in the specialty could be judged.
(g) The viva-voce part of the practical examination shall involve extensive discussion on any aspect of the specialty.

Subjects of Examination

1)  The preliminary examination at the end of one academic year after admission shall be conducted in the following subjects: -

  • Medical statistics and research methodology;
  • Fundamentals of non-clinical subjects of Ayurveda with an emphasis on applied aspects along with relevant studies of basic sciences of modern medicine. OR
  • Fundamentals of clinical subjects of Ayurveda with emphasis on applied aspects along with relevant studies of basic sciences of modern medicine.

2) The student shall have to undergo training in the department concerned and shall maintain a month-wise record of the work done during the last two years of study in the specialty opted by him/her as under: -

  • Study of literature related to specialty.
  • Regular clinical training in the hospital.
  • Practical training of research work carried out in the department.
  • Active participation in various seminars, symposia and discussions.
  • Finalisation of the topic of dissertation and synopsis.
  • The assessment of the work done during the first year on the above points shall be done at the time of preliminary examination.

(3) The final examination is conducted at the end of two academic years shall consist of:

  • Dissertation
  • Written Papers
  • Clinical and oral and practical examination.

(4) There shall be Four Theory Papers in each Specialty and One Practical or Clinical and viva-voce examination in the concerned specialty or group of sub-specialties selected by the student for special study.

Scheme of examination
The scheme of preliminary examination and the final examination to be followed in the practical, clinical and oral examination shall be as follow:

  • The examiner shall not be appointed for a period of more than 3 years at a time and may be re-appointed alter an interval of two years.
  • The examiner shall possess reaching experience of 5 years post graduate teaching.
    The medium of instructions shall be English, Hindi or Sanskrit.

Facilities for Post Graduate Students
The stipend and contingency shall be provided at the rates prevailing in the State for other medical postgraduate students.

Students Teacher Ratio
The teacher-student ratio shall be such that the number of postgraduate teachers to the number of post-graduate students admitted per year is maintained 1:2 in case of Professors and Reader and l.l for Lecturer(s). The maximum number of students per year per specialty shall not exceed six.

  • Candidates who have a natural inclination of serving humanity by curing them of their ailments are the most suited for this medical degree.
  • Candidates who have a strong belief that the Indian traditional system of medicine is better than allopathic can also pursue this degree.
  • People with a strong Sanskrit base are also suited for acquiring B.A.M.S. as the Sanskrit language is required in studying the course.
