Staff Selection Commission has replaced Combined Matric Level Exam with SSC Combined Higher Secondary Exam for recruitment to the posts of Lower Division Clerks and Data Entry Operators.
Combined Matric Level Exam - Taken by Staff selection Commission on National Level Combined Matric level exam is held every year for the recruitment of clerks and other lower level staff like a) Grade ‘C’ Stenographers b) L.D.C. c) Grade ‘D’ Stenographers in Customs Houses, Central Government offices/organisations like Central Secretariat Services, Railway Boards, Election Commission of India, Central Vigilance Commission etc. besides income tax department.
Combined Matric Level Exam Eligibility
1. Educational Qualification
Matric from a recognized Board or equivalent.
2. Age
18 to 27 years of age is required for the various posts mentioned above. However age may vary a couple of years for different posts.
3. Nationality/Citizenship

This type of Staff Selection Exam Paper consists of two steps. In first step preliminary examination is held. Those who are able to clear this test are allowed to take the main examination.

Combined Matric Level Exam Syllabus
The contents of this type of Preliminary SSC Exam are as follows:-
General Intelligence : The syllabus for General Intelligence would include questions of both verbal and non verbal type. The test may include questions on analogies, similarities, differences, space visualization, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination observation, relationship, concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidates' abilities to deal with abstract ideas, any symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.
General Awareness : Questions will be designed to test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, and Geography, economic scene, General polity, Indian Constitution and scientific research, etc.
Pattern and Syllabus of Combined Matric level Mains Exam?
The main examination of combined Matric level exam covers three examinations –

A) Main Examination for Grade ‘C’ Stenographers (Conventional Type)

Skill Test
Stenography skill test : 100 words per minute - 300 marks
(Stenography Test will be conducted later only for those candidates who qualify in the Main Examination)
Note: - The candidate who opt for Hindi/English in General Studies and Essay will have to take the skill test in Hindi/English as the case may be.
Syllabus for Grade ‘C’ Stenographers:
Paper I
A. General English: In additions to the testing of candidate's understanding of the English language and its correct usage, his writing ability would also be tested. Questions on paragraph writing, report writing/letter writing/precis etc. may be included.
B. General Studies: Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidate's general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to Sports, history, culture, geography, economic scene, general polity, Indian Constitution, scientific research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.
Paper II
Essay: Candidates will be required to write essay on two topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay, to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expressions.
Stenography Test:
100 words per minute- 300 marks
The Shorthand Test in English will comprise of one dictation test, at 100 words per minute for ten minutes, which the candidates will be required to transcribe in 50 minutes.
The Shorthand Test in Hindi will comprise of one dictation test at 100 words per minute for 10 minutes, which the candidates will be required to transcribe in 65 minutes.
Candidates will be required to transcribe their Shorthand Notes on manual typewriters and for this purpose, they will be required to bring their own typewriters with them.
Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment.
Second chance for Stenography Test will not be given to those candidates whose typewriters go out of order, for any reasons, during the test.
No electronic typewriters would be allowed under any circumstances.

Paper I

C. Arithmetic: Questions of this component will cover number system including questions on simplification, decimals, fractions, LCM, HCF, ratio and proportion, percentage, average, profit and loss, discount, simple and compound interest, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, tables and graphs etc.
Skill Test (Typewriting Test):
The candidates who qualify the main examination(s) will have to undergo a typewriting test. It is a Qualifying test only requiring minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute (in English) and 25 words per minute (in Hindi).
Candidates are allowed to take the typewriting test either in Hindi or in English. Candidates shall have to bring their own typewriter for the test. Use of electronic typewriter is not allowed in typewriting test.
The typewriting test will consist of one paper of running matter of 10 minutes duration.

c) Main Examination for Stenographer Grade ‘D’ (Conventional Type)

The Shorthand Test in English will comprise of one dictation test, at 80 words per minute for ten minutes, which the candidates will be required to transcribe in 65 minutes.
The shorthand Test in Hindi will comprise of one dictation test at 80 words per minute for 10 minutes, which the candidates will be required to transcribe in 75 minutes.
Candidates will be required to transcribe their Shorthand Notes on manual typewriters and for this purpose, they will be required to bring their own typewriters with them.
Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment.
Second chance for Stenography Test will not be given to those candidates whose typewriters go out of order, for any reasons, during the currency of the test.
