SSC Junior Engineer (CPWD) Exam 2024 - Staff Selection Commission holds an open competitive examination all over the country for recruitment of Junior Engineers (Civil and Electrical) in CPWD. A candidate who clears this exam is eligible to become an SSC Junior Engineer.

SSC JE Exam 2024 Eligibility

Educational Qualification

  • Aspiring candidates should have a Diploma in Civil or Electrical Mechanical Engineering from an institute recognized by the Central Government or an equivalent qualification.

Age Limits

  • Aspiring candidates should not be more than 27 years on the specified date of the exam.

 

SSC JE Exam 2024 Pattern

Junior Engineer (CPWD) Examination will be conducted in two parts:

A. Written Test B. Interview 
500 marks  100 mark

Part A i.e., a written test consisting of two papers as given below and Part B is a personality test.

Paper 1 will be of Objective type multiple choice.

Important: Paper-I and II will be bi-lingual (i.e., in Hindi and English). Candidates will have the option to answer Paper-II either in Hindi or in English language.

Paper-II will be evaluated in respect of only those candidates who qualify in Paper I at the minimum standard which may be decided by the Commission at its discretion.

Only those candidates who attain the minimum qualifying standard in Part-I of the Examination, as may be fixed by the Commission at their discretion, will be eligible to be called for a Personality Test/Interview.

Part B

Personality Test (Interview): 100 mark

The interview/personality test is structured in such a manner that the candidates’ interest, knowledge, various traits, aptitude, suitability, etc. are probed among other things, through academic qualifications, experience, extra-curricular activities, general awareness/knowledge, depth of knowledge of the subjects studied (10+2 onwards), communicative skill and over-all personality, etc.

Candidates called for an interview/personality test, have the option to converse either in Hindi or English language during the interview process.

 

SSC Junior Engineer (CPWD) Exam 2024 Syllabus

The standard of the questions in Engineering subjects will be approximately on the level of a Diploma in Engineering (Civil/ Electrical / Mechanical) from a recognized Institute, Board, or University and recognized by the All India Board of Technical Education.

General Awareness

Questions will be aimed at testing the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to Sport, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, Indian Constitution Scientific Research, etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

Structural Engineering

  • Building Materials: Physical and Chemical properties, classification, standard tests, use, and manufacture/quarrying of materials e.g., building stones, silicate-based materials, cement (Portland), Asbestos products, Timber and Wood-based Products, laminates, bituminous materials, paints, varnishes.

Surveying

  • Principles of surveying, working of properties, compass, and bearing, plane table surveying, theodolite traverse, adjustment of theodolite, leveling and contouring, curvature, refraction, permanent adjustment of dumpy level, methods of contouring and uses of a control map, tacho metric survey.

Soil Mechanics

  • Origin of the soil phase diagram, definitions of void ratio, porosity, degree of saturation, water content, the specific gravity of soil grains and unit weights, grain size distribution curves for different solids, and their uses.
  • Atterjerg’s limits, ISI soil classification, plasticity chart, the coefficient of permeability, effective stress, and consolidation of soils.
  • Calculation of shear strength of soils, direct shear test, vane shear test, triaxial test, soil compaction, Lab compaction, Lab compaction test, moisture content and bearing capacity of soils, plate load test, standard penetration test.

Hydraulics

  • Fluid properties, hydrostatics, measurements of flow, Bernoulli’s theorem and its application, flow through pipes, flow in open channels, weirs, flumes, spillways, pumps, and turbines.
  • Environmental Engineering: Quality of water, the source of water supply, purification of water, distribution of water, the need for sanitation, sewerage system, circular sewers, oval sewer, sewer appurtenances, surface water drainage, sewage treatments.
  • Theory of structures: Elasticity constants, type of beams, determinate and indeterminate, bending moment, and shear force diagrams of simply supported, cantilever, and overhanging beams.
  • Moment of area and moment of inertia for rest. & circular section, bending moment and shear stress for a tee, channel, and compound sections, chimneys, dams and retaining walls, eccentric loads, slope deflection of simply supported and cantilever beams, critical load and columns, torsion of circular section.

Concrete Technology

  • Properties, Advantages, and uses of concrete, cement aggregates quality, water-cement ratio, workability, mix design, storage, batching, mixing, placement, compaction, finishing and curing of concrete, quality control of concrete, hot weather and cold weather concreting repair, and maintenance of a concrete structure.

RCC Design

  • RCC beams flexural strength, shear strength, bond strength, the design of single reinforced beans, lintels, cantilever beams, double reinforced beams, one-way slabs, two-way slabs, isolated footings, and reinforced brickwork.
  • T-beams, columns, staircases, retaining walls, water tanks (RCC design questions may be based on both the Limit State method and Working Stress method).

Steel Design

  • Steel design and construction of steel columns, beams, roof trusses, and plate girders.

  • A.C fundamentals, instantaneous, peak, R.M.S. and average values of alternating waves, Equation of sinusoidal wave-form, simple series, and parallel AC. circuits consisting of R.L. and C, Resonance.
  • Measurement and measuring instruments, Moving coil and moving iron ammeters and voltmeters, Extension of range, Wattmeters, Multimeters, Megger, and Basic Electronics.

Electrical machines

  • Basic principles of D.C. motors, generators, their characteristics, Speed control and starting of D.C. motors, losses and efficiency of D.C. machines. 1-Phase and 3-phase Transformers: Principles of operation, equivalent circuit, voltage regulation, O.C. and S.C. tests, efficiency, auto-transformers.
  • Synchronous machines, generation of 3-phase e.m.f, armature reaction, Voltage regulation, parallel operation of two alternators, synchronizing, starting, and applications of synchronous motors.
  • 3-Phase Induction motor, rotating magnetic field, the principle of operation, equivalent circuit, torque-speed characteristics, starting and speed control of 3-phase induction motors, Fractional KW motors, 1-phase induction motors, A.C. series motor, reluctance motor. General, Transmission, and Distribution: Different types of power stations, Load factor, diversity factor, demand factor, simple problems thereon, cost of generation, the interconnection of power stations. Switchgear

  • The rating of circuit breakers: Principles of extinction by oil and air, H.R.C. fuses, Protection, earth leakage, over current, Buchhotgz relay, Merz- Prince system of protection of generators & transformers, protection of feeders and bus bars.
  • Lightning arresters, various transmission and distribution systems, Comparison of conductor materials, efficiency for different systems.
  • Utilization of Electrical Energy, Illumination, electric heating, Electric welding, electroplating, electric drives, and motors.

 

The flow of Fluids

  • Laminar & turbulent flow, the equation of continuity, Bernoulli’s theorem, measurement of discharge, flow through pipes, friction losses, Forces of jet impinging on vanes, blades, work is done and efficiency, classification of turbines & pumps.

Thermal Engineering

  • Laws of thermodynamics, change in entropy in various processes; uses of steam, Properties of steam table & charts; Construction & Working of Cochran, Lancashire locomotive & Babcock & Wilcox boilers, working of steam turbine, Otto & Diesel Cycles, working of IC engines, Carburetion, Solex Carburettor. Diesel fuel, pump & injector: Cooling & lubrication.

Production Engineering

  • Foundry- Different casting processes, the concept of Patterns; types of mold making, a purring defect in castings, causes & remedies, Welding classification and types of welding, Testing, and defects in welds.
  • Lathes- working of a lathe, various tools, operation on lathes, types of lathes. Drilling operations are performed on drilling machines. Description, principles of working, and various operations on machine tools, milling machine, shaper, grinder, boring and slotting machines.
  • The strength of Materials: Stresses in composite bars, the relation between elastic constants, Resilience under different types of loads, SF and BM diagrams; stresses in beams-combined direct and bending stresses, Struts and columns – Euler’s and Rankin’s theories, Torsion of circular shafts.

Theory of Machines

  • Simple Machines – Four bar chains, Slider crank chains, double slider crank chains, Flywheels - Turning moment diagrams.
  • The fluctuation of energy, Friction-in collar, pivots, plate clutch, conical clutch, and journal bearing.
  • Transmission of power through flat and V-belts, Gears, the profile of gears, Governors- Watt and Hartnell governors.

 

SSC JE (CPWD) Exam 2024 Dates

SSC JE (CPWD) exam will be conducted in the coming month of March tentatively.

 

How to apply for SSC JE (CPWD) Exam 2024?

  • Aspiring candidates can apply for SSC JE (CPWD) Exam in the application form given in Annexure-I in A-4 size paper.
  • The candidates may utilize original the form published in the ‘Employment News” for filling up the columns with a ball-point pen.
  • They may also use the application form neatly typed on white paper in double space and typed on only one side of the paper. There is no objection to candidates using the printing application form, if available from private agencies, as long as the format and size of the application form are exactly the same as published in Annexure-I of this advertisement.
  • The application must be filled up by the candidate in their own handwriting. They must put their signature in the appropriate places/declaration, failing which the application will be summarily rejected by the commission without any correspondence with the candidate.
  • The envelope containing the application must be superscribed in bold letters as “Application for Junior Engineers (Civil & Electrical) Exam and the name of the Centre from where the candidate intends to appear should be written in capital letters at the left side corner.
  • SC/ST/OBC candidates should also superscribe their category on the envelope.
  • Candidates have the option to submit either a self-attested/ self-certified photocopy of various documents or to submit photocopies of various documents duly attested by a gazetted officer as per extant procedure along with the application form. However, the original documents/certificates will be verified at the time of the interview and their candidature will be subject to the result of such scrutiny. While exercising the facility of self-attestation of various documents, the candidates are warned that - any wrong attestations so as the mislead the Commission or to gain access to our examinations, would lead to criminal/debar action against the candidates, besides cancellation of their candidatures.
  • The application may also be submitted at the Commission’s Regional/Sub-Regional Office concerned, personally/by hand within the stipulated date and time of submission.
