About PSG College of Technology

PSG College of Technology is a Government Aided and Autonomous College. On 25th January 1926, a trust under the name and style of P. S. Govindaswamy Naidu & Sons’ Charities was founded. The Managing Trustee of PSG, Sri G.R. Govindarajulu and the founder Principal Dr. G.R. Damodaran founded the College in 1951. The College was located in the same campus as the PSG Industrial Institute for effective industry-institute interaction. It is named after Poolaimedu Sama Naidu Govindsamy Naidu (PSG). Recognizing the excellent infrastructure, faculty, progressive out look, high academics and record performance, the University of Madras was confident in the capabilities of the College, and PSG College of Technology was conferred Autonomous status in the year 1978, to update its own programmes and curriculum, to devise and conduct examinations, and to evaluate students’ performance based on a system of continuous assessment. The academic programmes are designed and updated by a Board of Studies at the department level and Academic Council at the College level. These statutory bodies are constituted as per the guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education. The College is affiliated to Anna University and offers a total of 48 full time and part time programs in Science, Engineering and Management at UG & PG levels. The campus is spread over 45 acres of land, economically utilized for the College, Hostels, Staff Quarters, Play Fields and Gardens. The College has a close collaboration with industries, resulting in the cross fertilization of theory with practice.

Library - The College Library has about 1,83,132 books. The Library is spread over 4 Floors. The First floor is the Reference Section, the Second is the Lending Section, Third is the Floor Science Library and the Fourth is the Back Volume East Wing. The Bibliographical information of the Library are made available through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue).

Educational and Industrial Collaboration - The undergraduate engineering students are required to spend half a day every week in the PSG Industrial Institute which enables them to study the actual production processes and gives them an opportunity to observe the working of industry. A large number of projects, which the students undertake in collaboration with the PSG Industrial Institute and other industries meet the R&D requirements of industry.

CNCE - Centre for Non-Formal and Continuing Education provides job oriented, part-time and full-time short duration programmes. The main function of the centre is to plan and disseminate latest explosion of knowledge and developments in various fields of Science and Technology for the benefit of executives and other working professionals in various business and industrial organizations, faculty and student community of educational institutions and public at large. Sports - The department of Physical Education covers an area of 5 acres located near the Hostel Premises. The Department has infrastructures for all the indoor and outdoor games. There are sufficient facilities in the campus for both field events and indoor games for the students to practice and to conduct the Inter-Collegiate tournaments, Intramural Sports, Annual Sports Day and Coaching camps.

The College has:

  • G.V.Indoor Stadium (80x40) for Badminton with a seating capacity of about 500 is of international standard.
  • Open Air Stadium with a stage and a pavilion on both the side with a balcony which can accommodate about 1000 students.

Awards / Scholarships - The College offers various Awards and Scholarships to deserving students.

  • Proficiency Award - It is awarded to the student who have completed the programme in the previous year and secured the 1st Rank in each course.
  • Best Outgoing Student Award - It is awarded to the best outgoing final year student in each programme.
  • Koorathalwar Award - It was instituted in the year 1956-57 by 1955 batch students of PSG CT (First batch) in memory of their class mate Mr. S. Koorathalwar for awarding to the best outgoing student among B.E  / B. Tech. final year students.
  • Polytechnic Rolling Cup - It is awarded to the best outgoing student among Diploma final year students.
  • Precitex Award - Instituted in the year 1979 for the meritorious student in the subject, Spinning.
  • Sri Balaguruva Chettiar Memorial Award - It was instituted in the year 1980 by Thiru. B. Suresh Babu, Chennai for best outgoing final year student in Civil Engineering.

Centres of Excellence

  • Centre for Robotics - This centre supports the training and research project needs of students and faculty in the area of Robotics. Students and faculty members of the department of Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics, Computer Science, Production and Mechatronics Engineering make use of the facilities available in the centre.
  • TIFAC - Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council  is an autonomous body under the department of science and technology (DST). Under the broad umbrella of Technology Vision -2020, TIFAC has launched an ambitious mission called REACH (Relevance and Excellence in achieving new heights in educational institutions). The foundation of this mission rests firmly on the triangular linkage between the academic institution, industry and government. PSG College of Technology has been selected by TIFAC to set up a Centre of Relevance and Excellence in product design, optimization and collaborative product commerce.
  • Entrepreneurs' Club - The Club promotes Various Entrepreneurial activities with support from bodies like NEN (National Entrepreneurial Network) and YI (Young Indians).
  • Agilent Center for Advanced RF Design - The software Agilent ADS was donated to us by Agilent Technologies, Santa Rosa , CA for Academic purposes. The Centre is involved in Teaching the EMF, Microwave and RF Circuit design subjects in an understandable way rather than theoretical one, analysing and optimization of RF and microwave devices by electro studies and fabrication and experimental validation.
  • CAD/CAM Centre - CAD/CAM Centre and its associated centres namely Virtual Reality Centre and PSG-DSIR Consultancy Clinic on Product Styling & Design work in unison for providing solution to industries involved in design, manufacturing and product development. These centres are equipped with the state of the art hardware and software supported by a team of dedicated engineers and is one of the centres of excellence of PSG College of technology.

  • Engineering Design Laboratory - The Engineering Laboratory is equipped with computer hardware and software to perform geometric modelling and analysis of mechanical systems. The computer hardware constitutes one server and 44 computers. The software available are I-DEAS, ANSYS, ADAMS, Virtual Proving Ground (VPG) and DYNAFORM to perform modelling, mechanism analysis, finite element analysis and design optimization.

The courses offered by the Laboratory include:

  1. Static, dynamic and thermal analysis of mechanical systems using finite element analysis software.
  2. Computer Aided Mechanism Analysis and vibration for the benefit of students and industrial participants.
  3. Consultancy work pertaining to the above mentioned area is undertaken in the laboratory.
  • FESTO Centre for Pneumatic Automation - The centre was set-up with collaboration of FESTO KG, Germany. It imparts a state-of-the-art training in Pneumatics, Electro-Pneumatics & Automation.
  • Laser Laboratory - Calibration of high quality and sophisticated machinery, CMMs etc. can be done using the Renishaw LASER Interferometer available with the LASER centre. Nd:YAG LASER system is also used for processing of metals.
  • V.I. Centre - The centre consists of National Instruments hardware like data acquisition cards, Compact Vision Systems (CVS), image acquisition cards etc. The VI centre provides facilities for students to carry out their under graduate and post graduate projects. The centre encourages students in various disciplines to carry out projects which lead to various prestigious awards like Virtual Instrumentation Mantra (instituted by National Instruments), NI Virtuosity (instituted by BITS, Pilani) and Institution of Engineers Award. The Virtual Instrumentation centre is actively involved in conducting short-term courses for faculty and students from various engineering Colleges.   • Metal Testing and Research Centre - The centre aims to improve the global prospects of the industries as well as significantly improve metallurgical education and research in this region.

The centre offers training courses catering to the need of the local industries in various fields of metallurgy. Some of these are:

  • Thin Film Centre - Thin Film Centre conducts research work in the areas of Thin film optical memory devices, MEMS, Solar cells etc.
  • LAPP Centre for Excellence - LAPP is a German Company which is a leading supplier world wide for cables. It caters to the training  needs of students engineers and technicians. The faculty members in charge of the centre are fully trained in the field of cable technology at Lapp Kabel Factory, Stuttgart, Germany. To join the courses conducted by this centre is, the candidate must be either - A Student or Technical teacher from any Engineering College / Polytechnic College from Electrical / Electronics / Mechatronics / Instrumentation / Telecommunication disciplines with or without practical experience or An working Engineer / Technician  from industries.
  • L & T Centre in LV Switchgear - The Centre is involved in various activities like conducting Short term course on "Neuro Fuzzy System Principles and Data Mining Applications", Short term course on "VLSI design & VHDL" etc.
  • Media Laboratory - Media Laboratory with 45 Apple Make Computers and 5 Power Make Computers and a Server. The Laboratory is equipped with all the Multimedia software from Macro Media, Apple and Adobe. Presently the laboratory is used by the students for the creation of 2D animation for various subjects and also for video and movie editing.
  • Asian Regional Research in Energy - The Asian Regional Research Programme on Small and Medium Scale Industries in Asia: Energy, Environment and Climate-Phase II (ARRPEEC II), funded by the Swedish international Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and coordinated by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).   • Open Source Software Laboratory - The Centre is involved in internship projects, support faculty research, undertaking of consultancy projects, and bringing awareness of open source software development for faculty of other Colleges and public through workshops, short term courses and conferences.

Placement & Training - PSG College of Technology has an independent placement office catering to the needs of organizations in conducting campus interviews. The placement office, functions in a separate air conditioned block with all audio visual facilities for PPT, written test, group discussion and interviews.
