About Indian Law Society Law College - ILS

ILS Law College was established by the Indian Law Society in1924. The Indian Law Society is a Public Charitable Trust registered under the Societies Registration Act. It is one of the most prominent Law Schools based in Pune and one of the oldest as well as most reputed legal institutions in India. Initially it was affiliated to the University of Bombay. With the establishment of the University of Pune in 1949, the College was affiliated to it, and today it is one of the constituent Colleges of the University of Pune. In 2004, the ILS  Law College was accredited the A+ level by NAAC. ILS Law College offers courses in the Three Year as well as the Five year LL.B. Degree, Master's degree in Labour Laws and Labour Welfare and Diploma in Taxation Laws. It is situated in the Indian Law Society's campus extending over 175 acres of land with a backdrop of a beautiful hill.

Admissions - The number of seats for LL.M. course is limited to 60. Student who has passed LL.B. degree course after completing Three Year / Five Year LL.B. Course of recognized university shall be eligible for admission. Admission of the student shall be on the basis of marks secured in LL.B. degree course. The admission will be granted on the basis of merit only. The admission form should be submitted along with 1) DD of required amount; 2) Documents mentioned in the admission form; and 3) Two photographs of passport size.

Admission for Foreign Students - Students who are Foreign Nationals, Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf & South East Asia need to contact the International Students Centre,  University of Pune at 020-25601099 or visit the College website. The admissions to the above mentioned categories is processed by the University of Pune and not by the College.

Fees should be paid by DD of any nationalised bank or Rupee Co-Operative Bank drawn in the name of "Principal, ILS Law College, Pune" payable at Pune. All other fees and rules of payment, concessions etc. as stated in the prospectus will be applicable. If any fees are increased during the academic year by the College under any rules, orders or direction given from time to time by the State Government, Pune University, EIRA or other authorities, the student will be liable to pay any such increase. If a candidate cancels admission, fees are refunded according to University rules. In any case, there is no refund of fees for cancellation made after thirty days from the commencement of the course.

Facilities

IALS - The Institute complements and supports the efforts of the ILS Law College in promoting quality legal education. The Institute conducts research in Law, run courses of socio-legal interests with a view to spread legal education among people engaged in diverse pursuits. Diploma courses in Consumer protection Laws and in Housing laws were launched in the years 1992 and 1995 respectively. These diploma courses are designed for the lawyers, laymen and professionals. The Institute also organises workshops, seminars, lectures and discussions. Recently, the institute published a series of booklets on legal issues useful for lawyers as well as lay-persons. The Institute was given a grant by the Ford Foundation for conducting a research project entitled 'The Tribunal System in India' and for conducting workshops for judicial officers/administrative officers/lawyers and for researching on 'Public Interest Litigations'. The Institute was also given a grant by the Cummins Diesel India Foundation to set up a post of a lecturer called the `Cummins Lecturer' in the IALS. The Cummins Lecturer provides continuous research back-up for various courses of the Institute and takes responsibility for the administration of these courses.

ILS Legal Aid Programme - The ILS Legal Aid Programme was started in 1976. It has received grants from CILAS, UGC, State of Maharashtra and Ford Foundation. While the Legal Aid Cell is devoted to dispensing free legal advice and litigational assistance to the economically under privileged, the Conciliation Cell makes an attempt to settle disputes amicably. The centre works four days a week and inculcates in the students a sense of social responsibility. The programme is a compulsory part of the curriculum of Practical Training (Skills of Advocacy) incorporating client interviews and pre-litigation preparation. The Centre, in collaboration with other NGOs and voluntary organizations like Deepgriha, Ashtanokai, TATA Motors and Rotary Club of Pune Central, organized various legal aid / legal literacy camps to create awareness among people about their legal rights and duties under various acts, thereby helping the poor and needy to have access to justice. One more legal aid centre of ILS was opened at Market Yard in August 2006. The centre has completed a 3 year project on 'Human Rights and Law : Awareness and Implementation' linked with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, UK and sponsored by the British Council, Mumbai. The programme included legal literacy camps for villages and Para legal training for Social Workers of various organizations like K.E.M. Hospital, Streevani, Astanukai etc. The centre has also undertaken publication of legal literacy material on various legal issues like environment, succession, jurisdiction of various courts etc. A few booklets have already been published.

Hostels - The College provides separate in-campus Hostel accommodation for both male and female students. Hostel accommodation is provided to students strictly on the basis of merit. Students are provided with basic furniture, hot water facilities, water coolers, STD-ISD facilities in the campus, a dining hall for residents and visitors as well as a canteen. Outside caterers also supply food at nominal rates to students.

Men's Hostel - The Men's Hostel offers a total of 154 rooms, out of which 46 are double rooms and 108 are single occupancy rooms. The three-winged Hostel is flanked by tennis courts on one side and overlooks the picturesque Law College hill on the other. Ample and free parking space is available for vehicles of residents.

Fees : Rs. 30,000/- p.a. by cash. Mess facility is optional @ Rs. 1,500/- p.m. approximately.  

Ladies' Hostel - The newly constructed Ladies' Hostel has a capacity to accommodate 67 students with boarding and lodging facilities. There is a dining hall, study room, sick room, washing machine and TV and newspaper room, along with 24-hour telephone facilities.

Library - The Library is housed on a separate floor of the Sarswati building, the ILS library boasts of over 45,000 books and volumes of periodicals, journals and magazines. It subscribes to over 95 Indian and foreign journals each year, including the All England Reports, The American Journal of Comparative Law, The Cambridge and Oxford Law Journals, etc. It also offers computer and photocopying facilities to its students as well as an online search catalogue. The library has an inter-library loan network with the other prominent libraries in Pune.

Moot Courts - These are simulated court competitions which involve arguing on points of law by student 'advocates' before a bench of 'judges' usually comprised of members of the faculty and practising advocates.

Various Moot Courts

Raghavendra Phadnis Moot Court Competition - It is held every year in the month of August and is the basis for selecting the students to represent the College in the national and international moot court competitions.

N.V. Joshi Moot Court Competition - It is held in the 2nd term of the College, covers topics ranging from criminal law to torts. The Novice Moot Court is a recent addition to our repertoire of intramural moot courts. Every first year student is encouraged to participate in it and is ably guided by the senior students. Started by the Moot Court Society in 1997, this competition has become very popular with students and professors alike, as it has helped to discover the latent talent of the students.

Among the National Moot Court Competitions, the College has been a regular participant at competitions held by the Bar Council of India Trust; the Kerala Law Academy; University Law College, Bangalore; University Law College, Dharwad; Government Law College, Mumbai; Raj Anand Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition. Our students have also represented India at both Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition at Washington D.C., and the Stetson International Law Moot Court Competition, at Florida.

In 2002, ILS organized the first Surana & Surana International Moot Court Competition on Technology Laws. It attracted 16 teams from around the country. This event has become an annual feature on the mooting calendar. This year, it was held on 5-7th January 2007. 18 teams participated in the competition from all over India, as well as from Hong Kong. ILS Law College also hosts the Justice V.A. Naik All Maharashtra Inter Collegiate Moot Court Competition. This is a bi-annual competition in which teams from various leading Law Colleges in Maharashtra take part. The Student Moot Court Society ensures smooth and co-ordinated running of all the intra-mural and extra-mural competitions giving exposure to mooting culture to as many students as possible. It also assists the selected students in their preparation to represent the College at the various national and international moot court competitions.

Banking Facility - The Rupee Co-operative bank has an extension counter in the ILS campus.

Financial Aid - Various scholarships, concessions, freeships, etc. are provided by the Central and State Governments, and various endowments with the Institution. A designated faculty member co-ordinates the procedures for each academic year. Students are given ample time to submit applications. Details about how and when to apply for these endowment studentships and scholarships can be obtained by contacting the College office directly. All grants are awarded as per the disbursement policy.

Various Grants are provided are:

Central Government Grants

  • Scholarships to Students of Backward Classes - Students belonging to certain backward classes, viz. nomadic tribes, scheduled caste, scheduled tribes, and notified tribes (vimukta jaati) whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 60,000 receive from the Central Government tuition fees, other fees, and examination fees, and a maintenance allowance of Rs. 190-205 p.m. These students do not have to pay fees at the time of admission.
  • Freeships to students of backward classes - Students belonging to backward classes receive from the central government tuition fees, examination fees and other fees. There is no restriction regarding family income.

National Merit Scholarship - Students who have obtained more than 60 % marks in the qualifying exam (XIIth or Degree exam as the case may be) and whose annual parental income does not exceed Rs. 1 lac, receive this scholarship of Rs 100-120 p.m. Students who do not satisfy the income criterion receive a certificate of merit.

State Government Grants

  • Government Open Merit Scholarship - Students who have obtained more than 60% marks in the qualifying exam (XIIth or Degree exam as the case may be), whose annual parental income does not exceed Rs. 1 lac, and who do not receive any other concession, receive this scholarship of Rs 30-50 p.m.
  • Primary Teachers' Concession - A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of teachers serving in recognized primary schools.
  • Secondary Teachers' Concession -  A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of teachers serving in recognized secondary schools (from 5th std to XIIth std).
  • Freedom Fighters' Concession - A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of certified freedom fighters.
  • Ex-servicemen's Concession - A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of retired military personnel.
  • Service Personnel's Concession - A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of defence service personnel.
  • Economically Backward Concession - A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children the annual income of whose parents does not exceed Rs 15,000.


ICCR Scholarships - These are awarded to overseas students.

Students Aid Fund - Students Aid Fund is a fund constituted of contributions made by students with their fees, and interest on investments made of amounts from the fund. Financial Aid under the Students Aid Fund is given to deserving students on the basis of their regular attendance, tutorial work, good behaviour and progress during the term and whose total annual family income does not exceed Rs 18,000. Awardees can use the funds for payment of tuition fees, examination fees, Hostel rent, mess bill and purchasing books and clothing.

Endowment Studentships and Scholarships

  • Shri S Y Abhyankar Studentship - It is awarded to 3 students per term in the first year of the law courses, continued until the completion of the course subject to satisfactory progress.
  • Late Shri Vaman Vinayak Gadkari Studentship - It is awarded to 2 deserving students per term passing the first year examination of the law course based on their performance in this examination, and continued till completion of the course subject to satisfactory progress, preference to be given to students belonging to Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu Community.
  • R D Nagarkar Studentship - It is awarded to 2 deserving students of Chitpavan Kokanastha Brahmin Community until completion of course subject to satisfactory progress.
  • Ichalkaranji Studentship - It is awarded to a deserving student coming from ex-Ichalkaranji Jahagir if available, else to any other student.
  • Shri P D Apshankar Financial Assistance - It is provided to one or more needy student/s of the College for purchase of books, payment of examination fees etc.
  • Late Shri Ganesh Raghunath Abhyankar Scholarship - It is awarded to poor deserving candidates from the College.
  • Late Shri B P Baware prize - It is awarded on application to a deserving student who has passed the second year of LLB and continues as a student of the third year of LLB considering financial position, any physical handicap, devotion to studies, regularity in attendance etc.

Extra Curricular Activities - Students of the College take part in various competitions such as Quiz, Debate, Dramatics, Creative writing, Mock UN Assembly etc. The College has a Debating Association for this purpose. The Association organizes various debating, elocution & declamation competitions. It also conducts selections for the various Inter College and University competitions.

Sports Facilities - The College has a sprawling cricket, football and volleyball ground, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, tennis courts and an indoor sports complex with table tennis, chess and carom facilities. Athletics competitions are held around December - January during the annual College week.

College Magazine - 'Abhivyakti', the College Magazine is published around the month of April each year. It includes the annual report of the College and activities of the past year. The magazine has English, Marathi, and Hindi sections. It includes articles contributed by staff and students in each of these sections.

Placement Cell - The Placement Cell helps students find summer placements (internships during vacations) and regular placements (jobs after completing LLB or MLL & LW courses). In addition to providing access to various potential employers, the Placement Cell also provides the students with specialized training tailored towards the placement procedure. A faculty member co-ordinates the placement activities for each of the courses with the help of 2-3 students from the last-but-one year of the course. Student placements for the last few years have been over 90%.

Training - Final year students can enrol for the Placement Training on payment of the registration fees. These students undergo rigorous Placement Training covering:

Lectures about recent developments in law.

Management of profession of law.

Personality development.

Interviews and group discussions.

Placement Brief and Exposure - The College publishes a Placement Brief which is circulated to organisations. The Placement Brief contains bio-datas of students seeking placement. (Loose Document No. LD-2) The bio-datas of these students is also published on the Web site of the College.

Procedure for Placement:

  1. The cell identifies firms and organisations and invites them for joining placement in the College.
  2. Students interviews take place during the 'placement-weeks' in January-February of the academic year.
  3. Organisations make presentations about their activities, identify students for interviews, and conduct interviews/group discussions.
  4. Some organisations also invite students to visit their offices for interviews.

Achievements

  • The College has for more than a decade been ranked within the Top 10 Law Colleges in India.
  • It has been ranked by the AC Nielson-India Today Survey in the 7th position this year.
  • In the year 2000 it has been ranked in the 3rd position.
