About Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery - IIGJ

Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ), an initiative of GJEPC, was established under the aegis of Ministry of Commerce & Industries in 2003. The Institute has its main training facility at Andheri housed in its own fully air-conditioned standalone four-storied building, with a total built-up area of over 12000 Sq. ft. The campus reflects a commitment to quality and dedication to the creative and intellectual needs of students. The educational needs of the students are also promoted in unprecedented experiences of academic energy, exploration and challenges. The Institute is in its 15th year of existence and over 3000 students have since passed out from various educational courses.

At IIGJ, a student's education doesn't end at the classroom door. The Institute provides an incredible variety of opportunities for students to enhance and supplement classroom learning with hands-on experiences in top jewellery companies, a list which will read like the who's who of the jewellery industry.

The Institute's educational programs are well supported by 21 full time qualified and experienced faculties and also professionals from the industry who are also invited as guest speakers. Three CAD labs with an overall capacity of 100 computer stations with all licensed 3D design software, four design studios, and a 45 station work bench training setup for jewellery manufacturing. The Institute also has its own 60 seater air-conditioned auditorium with audio-visual support

Besides its main training facility at Andheri, IIGJ also has training hub at Tardeo in the heart of Mumbai City.

IIGJ is also collaborated with Mewar university to conduct Bachelor of Arts (B.A) – Gems & Jewellery (3 Year).

Apart from regular jewellery educational classes for students, IIGJ has collaborated with Welingkar Institute of Management Mumbai to conduct Jewellery Management programs.

Our Parentage – GJEPC

The Indian Gem & Jewellery sector is one of the most dynamic and fast-growing sectors of the Indian Economy.

The fact that India is the world's largest source for trained, skilled and adaptive manpower along with liberalized government policies that provide a conducive environment for bi-lateral businesses, is what contributes to the continuous growth of this sector.

Contributing around 19% to the overall Forex kitty of the country, the industry's growth over the years, can be attributed primarily to the continuous efforts put in by the Gem& Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

Set-up in 1966, the GJEPC has over the years effectively moulded the scattered efforts of individual exporters to make the gem and Jewellery sector a powerful engine driving India's export-led growth. This apex body of the gem & Jewellery industry has played a significant role in the evolution of the Indian gem and Jewellery industry to its present stature.

From being the world's largest manufacturer of cut and polished diamonds to becoming the leading international trading center, India's gems and Jewellery sector is now set on a growth trajectory. The exports grew by 38% to $14,329.23 million for January-December 2004 period as compared to $10,392.83 million in the corresponding period the last year. GJEPC aims to boost exports of gems and Jewellery to US $20 billion by 2007 and develop India as the only one-stop-shop for gems and Jewellery.

Also, on the anvil is the Bharat Diamond Bourse, one of the largest monoliths ever to be built in Asia.

The Bharat Diamond Bourse is an urban conglomerate of place, people and activities pertaining to diamond trading.

Built to provide world-class facilities to the members of the Indian diamond community, the complex aims to enhance the already predominant position of the Indian diamond industry in the world market.

GJEPC is continuously working towards creating a pool of artisans/designers trained to international standards so as to consolidate the Indian Jewellery industry and establish it as a prominent global player in the Jewellery segment. Towards this, the Council has recently organized a Trends Forecast Seminar, which aimed to give a complete overview of what influences, and inspires the world’s leading designers and how customers respond to social changes. Detailed researched insights into domestic and international markets were presented at the seminar by some of the best international trends forecasting experts.

With strength of over 6,500 members spread all over the country, the Council is primarily involved in introducing the Indian gem & Jewellery products to the international market and promote their exports. To achieve this, the Council provides market information to its members regarding foreign trade inquiries, trade and tariff regulations, rates of import duties, and information about Jewellery fairs and exhibitions.

The role of GJEPC can be broadly classified under the following categories:

  • Trade Facilitator: The Council undertakes direct promotional activities like organizing joint participation in international Jewellery shows, sending and hosting trade delegations, and sustained image building exercises through advertisements abroad, publications and audio-visuals.
  • Advisory Role: A crucial area of activity of the Council has also been aiding better interaction and understanding between the trade and the government.
  • Nodal Agency for Kimberly Process Certification Scheme: GJEPC has been appointed as the Nodal Agency in India under the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme.
  • Training and Research: The Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council runs a number of institutions that provide regular and part-time training in all aspects of manufacture and design in Mumbai, Delhi, Surat and Jaipur.
  • Boosting Exports: Among the promotional activities GJEPC undertakes for the sector is the organizing of joint participation of member - exporters in some important international exhibitions and puts up promotional stalls in others. The council participates in the entire key exhibitions/trade fair in USA, Hong Kong, Latin America and Middle East and has begun appointing consultants in important regions worldwide.
