About Aeronautical Society of India

The Aeronautical Society of India was established in 1948 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 with the support and patronage of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who also became the Society's first Patron-in-Chief. Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon'ble. Prime Minister of India is the current Chief Patron. The Society was formally inaugurated by Pandit Nehru at the Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, Bangalore on the 27th of December 1948. It was set up to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge of Aeronautical and Aerospace Sciences / Technologies and to strive for the elevation of Aeronautical and Aerospace profession. The Society is a major professional body in the field of Aeronautics, Aviation & Aerospace. The Society has 16 branches at all the important centers of aviation in the counter viz. Agra, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Kochi, Mumbai, Nasik, Nagpur, Pune, New Delhi, Sunabeda & Trivuvananthapuram. Society also has Journal Division and CFD Division at Bangalore. Its membership consists of more than 9,000, is drawn from all major Aeronautical establishments such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. D.G.C.A., Defence Research and Development Establishments, Academic Institutions, Aeronautical Development Agency, Indian Air Force, Indian Space Research Organization, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, National Airports Authority of India, Air India, Indian Airlines, Jetways, Pawan Hans, Aero Industry in Private Sector. Private Airlines, Defence Res. & Dev. Laboratory, Army Aviation Corps. The Society also drives its strength from financial support and active participation of its Corporate Members. The society has 53 Corporate Members from both National and International Sectors. The Society is managed by a Council consisting of a President, President Elect, Seven Vice Presidents, the Honorary Secretary General, Honorary Treasurer and fifteen members, twelve of whom are elected and the other three nominated to represent special interests.

Details of Examination

The Society conducts Associate Membership Examination twice a year. A pass in Section 'A' and Section 'B' of this examination is equivalent to a graduate at par with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from an India University.

Section - A

There are ten compulsory subjects in this Section and also there is a practical capsule of six weeks duration on workshop practices.

The compulsory ten subjects are:

  1. Applied Mathematics-I.
  2. Fluids Mechanics.
  3. Basic Electronics.
  4. Workshop Technology.
  5. Electrical Engineering.
  6. Introduction to Aeronautics.
  7. Engineering Thermodynamics.
  8. Engineering Drawing & Design.
  9. Strength of Materials.
  10. Microprocessors & Software Engineering.

Eligibility for appearing in the Section-A

  • A candidate who has passed Intermediate or 10+2 or Higher Secondary Examination (12 years course) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 50% or more marks in each or who had passed the Studentship Examination of the Society up to June 98 session after which examination was stopped, can appear in Section A .
  • Candidates who have passed B. Sc. (Physics, Chemistry & Maths) with a minimum aggregate of 50% in each of the three subjects over the three year period or Diploma in Engineering (3 years course) with 50% marks in aggregate over the three year period or Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course of 3 years duration from Institutes recognized by DGCA are also eligible to appear in Section A.
  • Airmen of Indian Air Force in any of the following trades under X category are also eligible to appear in Section A. AF/Fit. Elect/Fit. Eng/Fit. Inst/Fit. Rad/Fit. Rdo/Fit. Wpn/Fit. MT/Fit. Wks/Fit.(M) Photo/Fit. Missile/Fit(M), Missile/Fit.(L),Missile/Fit(E).
  • The following - categories of Air Technical personnel of the Indian Navy are also eligible to appear in Section A.
  1. Aircraft Artificer.
  2. Electrical Artificer (Air).
  3. Electrical Artificer (Air Radio).
  4. Aircraft Artificer (Weapons).
  5. All 5th Class and Leading Air Mechanics.
  6. Leading Electrical Mechanics (Air Radio).
  7. Leading Electrical Mechanics (Air).
  8. Leading Air Ordnance Mechanics.
  • Candidates who possess a degree in Engineering or have passed Section A & B examination of any other professional institution which has been recognized by the Government as being equivalent to a degree in Engineering, can also register for the examination.

Such Engineering graduates shall be eligible to seek exemption from appearing in up to six subjects of Section-A, details as follows:-

(a) Engineering graduates belonging to Electrical / IT disciplines can get exemption of six subjects, namely Applied Maths-I, Basic Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Microprocessors & Software Engineering, Engineering Drawing & Design, and, Workshop Technology.

(b) Engineering students belonging to Mechanical/civil/chemical etc disciplines can get exemption of six subjects, namely Applied Maths-I, Fluid Mechanics, Strength of Material, Engineering Thermodynamics, Engineering Drawing & Design, and, Workshop Technology.

(c) Graduate degree holders in Engineering and Diploma holders in Engineering are exempted from 6 week workshop Training Capsule.

Section - B


The Section-B has four different streams to choose from, and each stream has nine compulsory subjects and one elective subject, making a total of ten subjects.

The Four Streams are titled

  1. Aero-mechanical.
  2. Avionics.
  3. Maintenance & Production(Electrical).
  4. Maintenance & Production (Mechanical) streams.

A candidate can select either of the four streams at one time while pursuing Section-B. Each stream has Ten Theoretical subjects and Two Practical training capsules each of six weeks duration.

Eligibility for appearing in the Section-B

  • Candidates who have successfully completed Section-A subjects and the six week training capsule on workshop practices are eligible to appear in the Section-B.

Registration

a) Candidates who wish to appear in the Associate Membership Examination conducted by the society should register themselves as Student Members of the Society. Application form for registration should be sent on the prescribed form, which is attached with the Prospectus. The Prospectus costs Rs. 10/-. For receiving it by registered post / courier, please remit Rs.50.00 by bank DD.

b) Candidates, who qualify for Registration/Exemption as per conditions in para 6 should submit the duly completed application along with the following:-

  • Pass Certificate of Class-X, in original as well as a Certified True Copy for verification of Date of Birth and spelling/format of individuals name and father’s name.
  • Marksheet(s) and passing certificate of Class-XII/Diploma/B.Sc., as applicable, in original as well as a Certified True Copy for ascertaining the defined qualification for registration.
  • A bank DD of Rs 1600/- for the applicable fee plus postage charges for sending Registration Card, I-Card, Rules & Regulations Book and allied documents with Syllabus.

c) Certified True Copies of certificates must be signed by the student as well as attested by a Gazetted Officer/ Head of a Recognized Educational institution or a Member (full) of the Society. The name and designation of attester should be clearly visible and he should affix his seal/rubber stamp on the document.

d) All financial payments to the Society are to be through Demand Draft/Banker's Cheque/Pay order drawn in favour of the Aeronautical Society of India and payable at New Delhi.

e) Registration process may take about 3 to 4 weeks.

f) Candidates, whose applications for registration are received between 01 February to 31 July, shall be eligible to appear in the exams from following December exam-session on wards. Candidates, whose applications for registration are received between 01 August to 31 January, shall be eligible to appear in the exams from the following June session onwards. With additional payment of late fee of Rs300.00, the last date for each block is extended by one month, i.e. up to 28th February and 31st August respectively.

g) Registration Number shall be allotted to every candidate who has been accepted as a Student Member. Depending upon his/her educational qualifications, he/she shall be permitted to appear in Section A.

h) The society reserves the right to reject an application for Registration without assigning any reason.

Examination Centers

The Examination is held twice a year in June/December at the following eleven centres, namely:

  • Bangalore.
  • Chennai.
  • Delhi.
  • Hyderabad.
  • Indore.
  • Kanpur.
  • Kharagpur.
  • Mumbai.
  • Nagpur.
  • Pune.
  • Thiruvananthapuram.

A candidate may select the centre of his choice. Change of examination centre can be permitted provided a request for the same is received with payable fee, of Rs 200/- two weeks before the start of the examination.

Examination Application Form :

Application Form for the examination can be had on request, free of charge, by candidates already registered with the Society by sending a self-addressed (9"X4") envelope stamped for Rs. 10/- quoting their registration number. A candidate should submit a fresh application form, for every session. The completed exam application form should be sent not earlier than 15th February for June and 15th August for December session examinations. The last date of receipt of Examination Application Forms, without late fee is 10th April/10th October and with late fee of Rs. 200/- is 25th April /25th October for June and December session examination, respectively.

Facilities

Library - The Society provides Library facilities at Delhi for Delhi based student members. A good number of Branches of the Society have also established library facilities for local students.

Multimedia Facility - The Society also provides Multimedia And Video Based Learning facilities at its Headquarters.

Conferences - The Society encourages young scientists to participate in International Conferences by way of presenting technical papers, by way of part financial support.

Stipend Scheme - The Scheme is to provide on-job-experience/training in aeronautical industry, Airlines and R&D establishments and thereby to help the student members to secure a suitable job. The scheme is open for those who have completed Section B with minimum aggregate of 60% marks in Section B subjects. Selection is purely on merit. The duration of the on-job-experience/training is one year and selected candidates are given a stipend of Rs. 3000/- per month by the Society.

National Awards - The Aeronautical Society of India has been conferring annually National Awards in recognition and appreciation of outstanding contributions and achievements made in the field of aeronautics and aerospace sciences.

The Awards conferred are: -

  • National Aeronautical Prize.
  • Dr. Biren Roy Space Science and /or Design Award.
  • Dr. Biren Roy Trust Award.
  • Dr. V.M. Ghatage Award.
  • Excellence in Aerospace Education Award.
  • Production Technology Award.
  • Indigenisation of Aeronautical Equipment Award.
  • Swarna Jayanti Award.

Prizes for the Students

  • Shri R. Venkataraman Prize is awarded for the best overall performance in the Associate Membership Examination during the year. The Prize amount is Rs. 3000/-.
  • Society's Prize is awarded for the second best overall performance among students in this Examination during the year. The prize amount is Rs. 2500/-.
  • Indian Air Force welfare Prize of Rs. 1500/- is awarded for the best performance by an Indian Air Force personnel (including retired) during the year in this examination.
  • Dr. Abdul Kalam Prize is Rs. 3000/-. It is shared by students who score highest marks in any subject of Section B in June & December session, each year.
  • Mrs. Kiran Kant Prize is awarded for best performance by a female candidate during the year in the examination. The prize amount is Rs. 2500/-.

Seminars - The Society organizes Seminars, Workshops and Conferences to promote aeronautics and bring about greater awareness in this field.

Essay Competitions - The Society conducts Annual Essay Competitions to recognize and encourage talent amongst young scientists, engineers and students.

E-News - Council of the Aeronautical Society of India issues a monthly E-News to update developments to its Members and Professionals. The launch of the E-news marks yet another step taken by the Society in the dissemination of information for its over 9000 Members, Corporate Members, Companions, Industries and Institutions involved in the field of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies. The E-news also provides a platform for individuals to seek and offer career opportunities. Industries and institutions can showcase their products. The monthly E-news is managed by a team of dedicated aerospace professionals and hopes to fill the gap of ever growing opportunities and demands by continuous real-time interaction. It is our hope that the aerospace professionals, institutions and industries committed to the growth of aeronautics and space sciences will contribute significantly to the 'E-News' service of the Society and make it an interesting and purposeful interactive Forum.

Journal - Aeronautical Society is publishing a quarterly Journal called "Journal of Aerospace Sciences and Technologies". Considering the tremendous growth in the Aerospace activities in the Country the standard of the Journal to that of an International status in terms of quality and versatility. The Journal has extensive circulation among its Members, Corporate Members, Subscribers, Academic Institutions and Industries in India and Abroad.

Placement

  • The Society's graduates are eligible to compete in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for admission to IITs etc. for higher studies.
  • The courses are recognized by Government of India.
  • Some of the Universities in India and abroad admit our students for higher studies. It is recognized by the Engineering Council, London UK.
  • Those who have successfully completed Section A & B examination of the Society are occupying responsible posts in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Indian Airlines, Air India, Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited, Defence Research & Development Organisation, National Aeronautical Laboratories, Aeronautical Development Agency, Civil Aviation Department, various DRDO Laboratories and private airlines.

Aero India - It is the Biennial Aerospace Exposition being hosted by the Department of Defence Production - Government of India.

Annual Exhibition - It is held in November for the benefit of school children and the public at large. This is a part of the Aeronautical Society of India’s efforts in creating public awareness especially amongst the younger generation. This encourages youth to take up suitable careers in the arena's of Aviation and Space.

Achievements

The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) signed a protocol that will usher in higher degree of co-operation between the Professional Bodies. Journals: The two Societies will exchange their respective Journals and Magazines and encourage their members to publish research and technical papers in each other’s publications. Speaking on the occasion, Mr David Marshal, President of Royal Aeronautical Society said that RAeS would open an Office in Bangalore, the first of its kind in the country around March 2008.
