About Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research

Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research (LBS CAMSAR) is a Post-sea Maritime Education and Training Institute. It is the only institution in the world offering Extra Masters and Extra First Class Engineering courses, the highest programmes in the field of Nautical Science and Marine Engineering respectively. Also known as LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research it is one of the constituent Institute of Indian Maritime University, Mumbai. It became a constituent institute of the university in November 2008 when Ministry of Shipping decided to create the University. This college was established by the Ministry of Transport, Government of India, in October,1948 under the recommendations of the Merchant Navy Training Committee as a Central Government premier post sea training institute for merchant Navy officers of Navigation and Engineering for giving skilled technical instructions to the Merchant Navy officers of Navigation and Engineering Department for Certificate of Competency. It was initially named as ‘Lal Bahadur Shastri Nautical and Engineering College’ as a token of gratitude to former Prime Minster Late Shri. Lal Bahadur Shastri for making the present site available. It was renamed as Lal Bahadur College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research in 1994.The institute is housed in a modern seven-storeyed building on a campus which is located on area of about 6 acres of land at Hay bunder overlooking Mumbai harbour. The campus also faces Butcher and Elephanta islands and hills to the East on a six acre site on the harbour front at Hay Bunder Road, Sewri, Mumbai.

Transportation

LBS College is about 1.5 k.ms. from the ‘Reay Road’ Railway station and 2 k.ms. from 'Sewri' Railway station on the Harbour line of Central Railway.

It can be reached by BEST bus Nos. 60, 168 and also by the College bus at routine timings.

Facilities at LBS CAMSAR

Simulators – It has various simulators.

Facilities for Boat Work – The college has proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB)

Teaching Aids - Every classroom has an overhead projector. LCD projectors are available whenever required. A VCR and lots of training cassettes are available and are used as and when needed to reinforce classroom lecturing.

Classrooms - The classrooms are large enough to comfortably seat about 50 students at a time. There are some specially designed classrooms with all modern teaching aids.

Hostel Facilities - The college provides residential facility for students of all courses including short term courses. It has two multi-storeyed hostel blocks to accommodate 400 students and seven-storeyed residential block with 12 faculty quarters situated in the campus.

Library - LBS has about 6500 books covering various facets of marine fields. The library also houses manuals of the latest machinery and equipments. It also subscribes to about 10 professional journals, periodicals, newsletters etc. About 40 educational and training VCD’s are available for use in modular courses. It is also a member of the British Council Library. The library is open from 9am to 5.30pm. Internet facility for students is available during working hours.

Laboratory Facilities - The college is equipped with various modern ship equipment, models, necessary for higher post sea education. Amongst, these are gyro compasses, Magnetic Compasses, working models of large marine diesel engines, cut section ship models of different types.

Transportation - LBS CAMSAR has one 31 seater bus and one 52 seater bus providing transport facility to students/faculty/staff to and fro from the nearest railway stations.

Canteen - LBS Canteen facilities are extended to all students including day scholars and hostel residents. The canteen supplies refreshments, lunch and dinner at reasonable rates.

Medical Facilities - A qualified doctor visits the campus regularly to attend to the Students.

Recreation - Recreation facilities include television, newspapers, table tennis, volley ball, basket ball amongst others.

Post Office – A post office is also available for postal requirements.

Swimming Pool – There is also a swimming pool within the campus.
