About Indian Institute of Packaging - IIP Chennai

The first regional centre of the Institute was set up at Chennai in the year 1971. Initially, the Institute was located at Adyaar, Chennai in a rented premise and subsequently, the Institute acquired a land of one acre at Plot No. 169, Indl. Estate, Perungudi, Chennai and the building was constructed for IIP - Chennai in 1987. The Institute has a testing laboratory with few sophisticated testing equipments for the testing of packaging materials and packages. However, the major activity of this centre is to carry out the testing of bulk packages intended to be used for the carriage of dangerous goods for export either, by sea or air, following the IMDG and ICAO regulation, respectively. In addition, the Institute is also involved in consultancy services by way of providing advisory study visits for making spot suggestions and guidelines to the wide cross section of industries located in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Recently, the centre has also taken an initiative to upgrade the testing laboratory so that it can be accredited to the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO / IEC:17025-2005. Besides, the Institute has also started a new training curriculum on packaging in Tamil language. The main objective of this programme is to update the knowledge with regards packaging of skilled and semi-skilled manpower involved in various MSME sectors dealing with packaging business and operations.

Under the 12th Five Year Plan, the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India has also sanctioned funds for the establishment of an exclusive laboratory for the testing of Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC) which is mostly used as a bulk packaging material for export of chemicals. In fact, there are a number of leading manufacturers of Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers located in Tamil Nadu who are taking the services of the Institute for testing of FIBC and also obtaining the UN Certificate for export of dangerous goods.
