About Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College
Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Medical College has been established in 1981 by The Ananda Social and Educational Trust. It was initiated by committed Scheduled Caste persons whose aim was to of make a positive contribution for the betterment of SC and ST people. A Medical college named after Bharatha Rathna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was thus established under the aegis of Ananda Social and Educational Trust by 9 founder Trustees namely Dr.N.T.Mohan,Sri. P.L.Nanjundaswamy, Sri. L.Shivalingaiah, Sri. V.S.Kuber, Sri. H.S.Shivaswamy, Sri. M.K.Kempasiddaiah, Sri. M.H.Jayaprakash Narayan,Sri. B.Gopalaiah,Sri. S.Gurappaji. The college to this affect opened up new avenues for SC and ST people to find better slots in the social hierarchy.
The odds the visionary team had to contend with were many, but the co-operation and encouragement received from several quarters made the dream project a reality. The Government of Karnataka under the stewardship of Sri.R.Gundu Rao accorded sanction to the Ananda Trust to start a medical college on 6th July 1981 at Cooke Town. Subsequently, the Karnataka Government and Sri.B.Basavalingappa extended generous help with the allotment of 25 acres of land at Kadugondanahalli, at virtually no cost, to build its own campus. The Trust, which also runs a Dental College, a School of Nursing, a college of Physiotherapy as well as institutes of Medical Laboratory Technology and Radiography, has rich experience in the field of education. Its motto is to serve the weaker sections of the community, handicapped socially, educationally & economically.
In May 1987, the college moved to its own campus at Kadugondanahalli. The college was initially affiliated to the Bangalore University and is now affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. The college runs the MBBS course as well as post-graduate courses in many subjects that are recognized by the Medical Council of India

Facilities
Hostel - The college runs a hostel each for the men and women students of the college within the campus at Kadugondanahalli. The hostel buildings with spacious rooms, lounges, recreation room having colour television sets in each of the hostels, with all other modern amenities, are built to ensure comfortable stay of the inmates, and a proper atmosphere for study. The women students’ hostel, with a view to ensure absolute safety of the inmates, is fenced properly and secured.
Central And Departmental Libraries - The Central Library has a sufficient number of text books in all subjects in the ratio of 1 book to 10 students with access to audio-visual aids, Micro Film Reader, MEDLINE database, Proquest Medical Library connected to HELINET by RGUHS & Internet. Email Services are available to enable teachers, Post graduates and researchers to get the latest references as well as past journals for their dissertation and research work. Computers, video and TV, Photocopier, film reader etc., are also available. Both national and foreign journals are subscribed to in each subject to meet the demands of learning and to keep abreast with recent literature in each specialty.
The central library has about 14,100 books on various subjects. We keep adding new titles and revised editions to the library every year. Apart from textbooks and reference volumes, the library subscribes to a large number of specialized foreign journals of repute. The Central Library functions between 9.00 A.M and 11.00 P.M Apart from the central library every department maintains its own departmental library facility for their staff and PG students. These libraries, in addition to the textbooks in the concerned specialties, maintain specialized journals and magazines also.
Internship - After passing of Final MBBS Examination, the student should undergo 12 months of Compulsory Rotating Internship in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Community Medicine as detailed below:
1. Every candidate will be required, after passing the Final MBBS, Examination to undergo compulsory Rotating Internship, to the satisfaction of the University for a period of 12 months, so as to be eligible for the award of the degree of MBBS and full registration. All parts of the internship shall be done as for as possible in Institutions in India. In case of any difficulty the matter may be referred to the Medical Council of India to be considered on individual merits.
2. The University shall issue a Provisional MBBS pass certificate on passing the Final MBBS Examination.
3. The candidate shall obtain provisional registration certificate from State Medical Council on production of the provisional MBBS pass certificate. The provisional registration will be for a period of one year. In the event of shortage or unsatisfactory work, the period of provisional registration and the compulsory rotating internship may be suitably extended by the appropriate authorities.
4. The compulsory Rotating Internship for 12 months should be done in teaching and non-teaching approved hospitals like District hospital, Rural Health Training centre / and upgraded primary health centers attached to the existing institutions. Satisfactory collaboration must exist between such hospital/rural centers and the medical colleges. The compulsory Rotating internship shall include training in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and in Community Health Work at rural Health Training Centres or Upgraded Health Centres.
Research Programme - The college is active in research in various branches and research work along with P.G. Training is being carried out in many departments. The scientific society of the college provides the forum for monthly clinical meetings and presentation of research / dissertation work. The medical education unit constituted as per the guidelines of MCI and RGUHS is functioning to promote academic awareness. Under the auspices of the scientific society and medical education unit, state annual conferences, seminars, quizzes and programmes of Continuing Medical Education (C.M.E.s) have been conducted regularly. Research papers have been presented at national and state conferences and published in national journals.
Peripheral Services - The satellite urban & rural health centres of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Medical College provide extension of medical relief to semi-urban and rural populations. They also act as centers for re-orientation and training of medical students. Apart from this, regular monthly specialists’ camps are organized at various villages in and around Bangalore. The college is also involved in all centrally sponsored national programmes of health viz. Family Planning, Leprosy Eradication, prevention of Blindness and Universal Immunization.
Hospital and OPD - The college has its own 560 bedded hospital situated in the campus catering to the needs of weaker section of the society and also to satisfy the requirements of Medical Council of India, a statutory body which offers recognition to the Medical courses run by the college. The hospital has most of the specialties including pharmacy, blood bank and physiotherapy to suit the current needs of the patients attending the hospital at an affordable price. The attendance of patients at both out patients and in patients department has been excellent providing a perfect teaching and learning environment to the Medical, Nursing and other Paramedical students in addition to clinical research. Sports - Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Medical College lays great emphasis on the all round development of the personality of the student. A committee, headed by the Principal and comprising senior professors, talented members of the staff, sports secretary and student representatives, has been set up to monitor and promote sports activities.The college campus has a spacious sports ground and materials for several outdoor sports and indoor games. It is a matter of pride that many students come out in flying colours in National, State level, Inter-university and Inter-medical sports competitions
Extra Curricular Activities - Students take a keen interest in literary and cultural activities. The College Day, Karnataka Rajyothsava Competitions and Graduation Day are an apt showcase for their talents. A college magazine is brought out with articles mostly contributed by students and staff.
