Tamil Nadu to set up fisheries varsity

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has decided to set up a fisheries university in Nagapattinam district, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said on Tuesday.

The chief minister informed the state assembly that the university will come up on 85 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs.30 crore.

She said Nagapattinam, with a coastline of 188 km, is emerging as the hub of fishery industry, with around 9,000 fishing boats in operation.

She said that in the first phase, five institutions will be affiliated to the proposed university and courses like shrimp farming, fish processing and allied activities will be started.
