A University Grants Commission (UGC) appointed panel has recommended a ten-year term for a college principal, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
A committee, appointed by UGC, to revisit the University Grants Commission Regulations, 2010, has recommended a period of ten years as the terms of appointment of a college principal with the eligibility for a reappointment of another five years, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor said in a written reply.
At present, a principal gets a term of five years with the eligibility for reappointment for one more term, Tharoor said.
He added that the total experience of teaching, research and administration for the post of principal is recommended to be reduced from fifteen years to ten years.
The committee has stated that it is important to recruit dynamic and promising people for the pivotal post of principals in colleges and reasonably young people who are deserving should not be unduly excluded on the account of their age and experience, he said.
