New Delhi:Delhi University has announced that the semester system will be implemented this year, but only for 12 science courses.
All science courses except B.Sc. Mathematics (Hons) and B.Sc. Chemical Sciences will be adopting the semester system at the beginning of the new academic session 2010-11 starting in July. However the Humanities and Commerce courses will be following the old system of annual examinations.
Students who will be opting for Science courses at DU this year would have to appear for two examinations in a year instead of just one final examination.
The implementation of the semester system for other courses had been ignored because it was being strongly opposed by some members of the DU Academic Council, which makes the final decisions for the University.
The Academic Council consists of serving and retired teachers and the Vice Chancellor. The decision to implement the semester system for the science courses was made at an AC meeting on Thursday.
The meeting had gone on for over 10 hours. Deepak Pental expressed his regret that the semester system had not been implemented this year for all courses, terming it as unfortunate. But he was hopeful of extending this implementation to all the courses by the end of next year, the semester system will be implemented for all programmes that are being offered by DU," he said.
