The West Bengal government is determined on holding a common entrance test (CET) for admission to state universities for post-graduate studies from 2013 despite opposition from students.
However, keeping in mind university autonomy, the CET committee has proposed to give 50% weightage to CET scores while letting varsities decide on the remaining 50% .
The universities can hold interviews, written examination or give points based on the performance of students at the graduation level.
"All students who will be graduating in 2013 will have to appear in CET in June. The PG courses, starting from August onwards, will be filled by students who clear CET. A merit list will be published based on the CET score. The students can then apply to various universities in their preferred subject based on the score. The universities may also prepare a list depending on the CET rank. They will then have to clear the university's own selection process." said a higher education council official.
