As a result of abolishing conventional courses like B.A, B.Sc and B.Com Programs under the newly adopted provision of Four-year Undergraduate Programs in Delhi University, 33 DU colleges have launched one or more Discipline I - honors or 'major' - courses.

  • 15 DU colleges are introducing a Discipline I course in Economics from the academic session 2013. As per the intake list released by the university.
  • 10 colleges are commencing Discipline I courses in Mathematics
  • 8 in Computer Science and
  • 7  in English and History each.

With seven new courses — botany, chemistry, economics, history, mathematics, physics and zoology, Sri Aurobindo is at the top in launching new Discipline I courses. Whereas, colleges like Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Bhagini Nivedita, Ramanujan, Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Swami Shraddhanand share the second position with five courses launched by each. Before the introduction of FYUP, Bhagini Nivedita used to offer only Hindi as honors course, but now the college is offering Discipline I program in Commerce, History, Home Science, Physics and Political Science.

In most these colleges, the expansion of Discipline I range has been done as a single solution to twin problems of insufficient number of honors courses to absorb the newly available seats and of ensuring work load on teachers who taught BA, BSc or BCom Program courses. Colleges have introduced Discipline I program in subjects they have been taught as part of the program courses as well as for which they already possess some resources. Many colleges had small –and in some, even single-teacher — departments that were enough to teach only program courses. But, now these departments are being extended to the honors level, and their respective colleges are on the quest to recruit more faculties while trying to give permanent positions to ad hoc teachers.
