Out of a total of nearly 34,000 engineering seats in private engineering colleges across the state, only about 8,000 have been filled, leaving around 26,000 seats vacant as the registration process came to an end.
Odisha has 38,000 engineering seats in total, out of which 4,086 are in eight government engineering institutes. It is the 34,000 seats in 86 private colleges that seem to exceed demand.
Students who secured ranks in JEE Main examination are among the ones to have enrolled themselves for admission. The online registration process for the same ended on Wednesday midnight where over 12,000 students have registered for various engineering courses.
Last year, more than 25,000 of the 44,000 seats remained vacant therefore the number of seats were reduced to a little over 38,000 this year.
In an effort to help out the private engineering colleges, the state government has started conducting a second or special OJEE test to enrol more BTech students. The colleges hope to fill up some of these through the test which is scheduled to be held on July 22.
