Some businesses may use the terms system administrator and network administrator interchangeably, and many tasks overlap. However, there is a distinction. System administration is concerned with servers and computer systems, whereas network administrators are concerned with network-related duties and equipment, such as routing, IP addresses, and the upkeep of Local Area Networks (LAN).
In a smaller business, these functions may be combined into one job, whereas bigger companies may separate them. Because systems and networks are frequently linked, it is not uncommon to see job descriptions that need the expertise of both.
