Answer: Algae are a large and diverse group of simple, primitive and rootless plants that grow in sunlit waters in relative proportion to the amounts of nutrients available. They are photosynthetic, like plants, and "simple" because they lack the many distinct organs found in land plants. All true algae have a nucleus enclosed within a membrane and chloroplasts bound in one or more membranes. They are food for fish and small aquatic animals.
